We by Yevgeny Zemyatin (1884 - 1937). Translated by Gregory Zilboorg (1890 - 1959)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/we-by-yevgeny-zamyatin/

Volunteers outside the USA: Gregory Zilboorg died in 1959. The author's work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955) or Canada (author's death plus 50 years), UNLESS the rule of shorter term applies. <p>
We is considered to be one of the first dystopian novels and the inspiration for later novels in the genre such as George Orwell's 1984 and Aldus Huxley's Brave New World. The story takes place in a future totalitarian world where conformity is good and individuality bad. It is written from the perspective of one of the members of this society who sees all he knows and loves falling apart due to others' quest for freedom of thought and action.

This book addresses the perpetual conflict between between independent individualism and mob mentality.

This work, by Russian author Yevgeny Zamyatin has the distinction of being the first book banned by the Soviet Union.
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/61963
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Record [number] of We by Yevgeny Zemyatin. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:

This is a pretty big project. You might consider recording another section in a group project before you get started here.

I can MC this. I'll be back later to help you with access and your new role as Soloist/BC. :D

Hello Mleigh,
As a soloist you are also the Book Coordinator (BC). This means you are responsible for updating the MW and workflow status (ready for pl, ready for spot check).

The MW requires a separate log in from your LibriVox login. The following is the information you need to set up access and what to do once you have access. Once you have access please update the titles so I know you have access and we will be all set to proceed. Please let me know if you have any questions. :D

Workflow login:
http://librivox.org/workflow

Workflow instructions for BC's and DPL's:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kVj409nG_E0XJ5UrrcL7EVx7Qyx-2UQ7dbw4mINi3XQ
Also in the wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/BC%27s:_How_to_update_the_Magic_Window

I adjust the intro/endings slightly based on the text.

Please let me know what genre you would like to use. You didn't include one in your template set up. Also, let me know if you have any keywords to include.

We link to the Wikipedia page so we do prefer a summary you write yourself.

I know how long it is. And I've got a couple of short reads on my plate and then I'll see how it goes.

It is a different translation than the one I am familiar with.

I'd love to have you be the DPL. It is an interesting book. It is easier than a lot of the Russian novels. It also has the distinction of being the first book banned in the Soviet Union and wasn't published there until the 1980's.

The genre is science fiction.

I guess some keywords would by: dystopian society, totalitarianism, Russian banned books

Is there a thesaurus of approved terms?

I will work on a summary.

Thank you for the information. The genre and keywords are updated. There is not approved terms but the ones you chose sound good.

I'm glad to see you can get into the MW. We are off to Going Solo. Enjoy your project. I'll be around if you need anything.

Record 3 is also PL OK! I am certainly enjoying it a lot! It is interesting to try to keep in mind that it was written almost 100 years ago as I'm listening
