Young Hugh Tregarthen has grown up in a seafaring Cornish family, but is not born to follow the family tradition. Against his mother's wishes, he is coxswain of a lifeboat -- an important job along the treacherous coastline, which makes his mother proud, despite her misgivings. One morning, as he sets out for his boat Janet, invalid Mrs. Tregarthen warns her son of an ominous dream she had the previous night. He laughs it off... but sometimes, dreams come true. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

AFTER recording Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The latest version of Audacity is recommended for noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide. Save files as

Hi Lynnet,
I am going to hand this chapter back in . I am having trouble making it sound ok with some of the way it is written . I recorded the chapter but was not happy with quality of my read.

Not a problem. Not every project works for everyone
I am wondering about claiming Chapter 1, as it has been handed back?
I must warn you though that I'm extremely unreliable at present due to various things and I may crash out suddenly - but as chapter 1 is fairly short I hope I will finish it, but it may take me a while.

What do you think?

I’m not sure why it was handed back. My only guess is that there is a small amount of vernacular (rough and ready English seaman), which, tbh, I wouldn’t find a problem and I imagine you wouldn’t either.

I had a quick read through and it all seemed OK as far as vernacular was concerned, so I would be happy to give it a go. I'm just struggling at the moment.

I've edited my previous post as it was a bit unnecessary in places.
I will get started as soon as I can, probably towards the end of December when life becomes a bit boring, especially around 24th-31st.

Actually I have already started and I am about 30% of the way through, having recorded and edited over ten minutes worth. It isn't too bad and the only slight problem so far is the long sentences, but I'm getting used to that.
Chapter (section) 01 of My Danish Sweetheart Volume 1
Duration: 33:45
32.39MB
I hope I got the vernacular about right, and although I've been to that part of Cornwall several times, the people there no longer speak like that very much these days. Not an easy read as the sentences were very long as well, and I can see why the previous reader gave up. It probably sounded like a foreign language! Interesting story though, and very emotional.
