I used to think of "slough" in the noun sense as rhyming with "bough" but have heard "slew" more recently... maybe it's a regional thing? I see both listed online. (I'm from New England...)
I’ve never heard of slough pronounced “bough”- that’s a completely foreign idea to me. Here in California we say “slew”... I live like five minutes away from one so that’s how I know.

Just don't pronounce it "sluff" (like "tough").
EDIT: Which, by the way, is the proper pronunciation for the verb "slough" as in, for a snake to slough off (shed) a skin, and (noun) for the shed skin thereof.

Good to know! It's interesting how many ways the “ough” ending can be pronounced.

There was a young lady called Psyche
Who was heard to ejaculate "Pcryche!"
For while riding her pbych
She ran over a ptych
And fell into a hedge, which was pspyche.

Did you make that up? It’s hilarious!

Ah, but what if the physician gasped at the sloughing vicissitudes of the slough?
...As you can see, "gasped" is still my most unfavorite.

As the kookaburra said, try and wrap your laughing-gear around the Welsh LL- sound.

I have several words like vicissitudes that I stumble on because of their repeated sounds, like "si". I break their syllables up with hyphens or slashes, and bold or underline the stressed syllable: vi-
ci-ssi-tudes. Easy fix for me. I hope it helps you.
But stumbling on them makes fun bloopers...

I LOVE that word, just for its sound and spelling.
