War Is A Racket by Smedley Butler, Maj. Gen. (Retired) (1881 - 1940).
Army Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler's expose of American Corporate Imperialism. Butler said, “I served in all commissioned ranks from second lieutenant to Major General. And during that period I spent most of my time being a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street, and for the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer for capitalism. I suspected I was just part of the racket all the time. Now I am sure of it.” ( John Greenman and Americans Who Tell The Truth https://www.americanswhotellthetruth.org/portraits/major-general-smedley-butler?fbclid=IwAR18mjqIVZZOqQS8g6VmTeTWEpHtoIv5AnkNC2Nef5yIaMF38I67RjHkNQ8)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://ratical.org/ratville/CAH/warisaracket.txt
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): wordperfect

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Chapter [number] of War Is A Racket by Smedley Butler, Maj. Gen. (Retired). This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"

"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"War Is A Racket by Smedley Butler, Maj. Gen. (Retired), [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of War Is A Racket by Smedley Butler, Maj. Gen. (Retired). This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"
    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of War Is A Racket by Smedley Butler, Maj. Gen. (Retired). "

There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.
  • Example filename warisaracket_##_butler_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. warisaracket_01_butler_128kb.mp3)

John
do you have evidence this is public domain?
We do have a version in the catalogue in a collection, but when I looked up the Archive text link it gives, Archive had taken it down, I've contacted them to see if I can find out why the text was removed.

Anne - the HathiTrust link in the "original publication date" field in the temporary paragraph (the part that gets deleted in the first post) is to a scan that's full view - so that should make it PD. :)

EDIT: This is set up.

Were you able to see the P.D. mention on the listed web page?
I can do a screen save, if not.

The HathiTrust one is here: https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/001324559

However, it doesn't matter for this project if Archive's text is available or not. John - carry on. 8-)

Tricia,
Thanks!
I’ll send in the first chapter when everyone’s on board with PD status.
AND... Rob Shetterly says we can use his portrait of Butler from the web page at the “Americans who tell the truth“.
