Hi MaryAnn,

Here are Chapters 3 and 4. For the end of Chapter 3 on the section Pronunciation of "brougham", I said "brougham" and then spelled the word "broom". If you'd like to to say both of the words (as pronounced) instead of spelling "broom" just let me know and I'll be glad to change it.

Thank you Ruth.

On my drive to work this morning, my radio chose to play In the Street and At the Play off of my USB stick, both of which are PL OK.

So there was a time when the rule in the UK was "keep to the right"? Or was that only when walking on the sidewalk at the side of a lady? But then you don't really stay to the right if you are supposed to stay toward the street . . . I'm perplexed. :hmm:

The rules for the play were easier to follow - it's rude to step out for a drink and a smoke at intermission, even if your ladyfair tells you "it's ok". Maybe our author forgot that said ladyfair may want to grab a cigarette and drink of her own in the ladies lounge while her escort is with the guys . . .

Someone suggested to me that the rule for the man keeping to the right, was to do with which side they had their sword scabbard :?:

From what I read this morning on just that subject (I was a bit curious when I got to work if the UK had really been on the right rather than the left), it seems folks started on the left to keep their right hand free to strike anyone coming at them on the road. Then Napolean switched to the right after the French Revolution, and the Russians seemed already on the right because the postillions would ride on the left rear horse in order to better apply the whip to the team, which meant they wanted to drive on the right so they could seek that there was clearance with any carriage they met coming toward them on the road, and the US was on both sides depending on what country you immigrated from, until they finally settled on the right as well.

I watched a video once about a country in Scandanavia which switched in modern times from left to right - pretty cool how they prepared all the traffic signals and road signage, and then one day, everyone woke up and drove on the other side of the road.

Jude,
The omnibus is PL OK. Reminds me of the days I would read the paper on a crowded commuter train . . . except there was not sitting on top.

I've been catching up on listening - and sections 2, 3, 15, 17, 20 and 25 are all PL OK.

That covers sections from Jenn, Betty, Ruth and Foon.

Downloading a new batch for my commutes this week!
