An essay towards a history of the principal comets that have appeared since the year 1742 : including a particular detail of the return of the famous comet of 1682 in 1759, according to the calculation and prediction of Dr. Halley ... to which is prefixed A letter upon comets ... by the late M. de Maupertuis ..

They was commissioned by Gabrielle Émilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, Marquise du Châtelet 1706-1749 to discover as much as he could about the comet of 1742.

The book is his life story and then his letter to the madam.
