Christmas Short Works Collection 2018

A delightful collection of stories and poems, with several interesting selections discussing various Christmas and holiday traditions, and a lovely Christmas play, featuring a full cast. All selections have been chosen and narrated by LibriVox volunteers to commemorate Christmas 2018.

Cast of Ola, or A Christmas Present for Mother:
Alta Good: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/11084">Devorah Allen</a><br>Henry Good: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/11790">TJ Burns</a><br>Leon Good: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/10789">Tomas Peter</a><br>Mrs. Good: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/12500">Foon</a><br>Ola: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/12243">Jasmin Salma</a><br>Narrator: <a href="https://librivox.org/reader/8051">Maria Kasper</a><br>
  • How to claim a part: It is not necessary to pre-claim a section for this project. Simply follow the instructions below.
    1. Find a Christmas-themed selection (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, whatever) in any language.
    2. Ensure that your text is clearly in the public domain. Gutenberg is a good source. Another possibility is an archive scan which includes clear copyright information. Publication date must be 1922 or earlier. If you are unsure about the copyright status of your selection, you may want to ask for help to verify that it is public domain before you record.
    3. If you are not in the US, please ensure that you know and abide by the copyright laws in your own country as well as US law (above). Again, if you are unsure, ask.
    4. Your submission can be as long or short as you need, as long as it is under 70 minutes or so.
    5. If you'd like to see what has already been included in a previous Christmas Collection, they can all be found here: https://librivox.org/search?q=christmas%20collection&search_form=advanced However, if your selection has been done before, you are still welcome to submit your own recording. I do ask that no duplicates be included in the same collection together.
    6. Extra sections will be added to the MW as they become necessary.
    7. Please feel free to submit suggestions of works that would be a good fit for this collection, if you know of any. I will collect these suggestions in the post below.
  • New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  • Is there a deadline? All submissions should be received by Wednesday, December 19. Should you wish extra time, you may request it, but we may be unable to grant it. Discretion will be left to the DPL and the MC, in that case.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'd like to start this off with a short Christmas play. It is called Ola, or, A Christmas Present for Mother. https://archive.org/details/olaorchristmaspr00madd/page/n3

We will require 6 readers, and I am happy to make this gender neutral.

Mrs. Good
Her children:
Alta Good
Henry Good
Leon Good
Ola, a street waif
Narrator

These parts should all be submitted by December 15, to allow time to assemble dialogue together!

I'd be happy to MC this as long as it catalogued on time. I'll be snowed under (not literally of course from the 22nd December here (which is 21st over there) I do notice you've set the 10th for final contributions and the 15th for the play submissions - which by the time you have PLing, corrections, editing may not make my deadline - anyhow I'll set it up and we can discuss it then

I'm happy to adjust those dates if needed. I do think that a deadline of the 15th for the play submissions will be fine. It is a short play and shouldn't take more than a couple of hours to assemble, at most. I arbitrarily picked the 19th for all other submissions, knowing that my MC may wish to adjust it.

And here is the story I've been hanging onto since January!

Also, I am happy to PL and edit the roles for the play, but I'll want a DPL for everything else, and of course for the final edited play.

I know my sig line says that I'm gone already, and I will be soon. But first, I think I want to read Ola's part myself. I'll add myself to the MW later.

Also, Foon, at the end, Mother reads a passage from the Bible. I'd like you to actually read that, rather than leaving it in the stage directions. But of course, it will need to be from a PD translation. I'll leave it up to you to choose which translation, just let me know which one when you submit your part.

Sure, sounds good. I'm looking around a bit (I'm not religious, and I know squat about Bible versions) and I think the Douay-Rheims translation (Challoner revision) looks good.
You OK with that? Link is here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/8347

Assuming the play does not count towards my three submissions, may I play Leon Good? :) I always love these collections and am glad to see a new one has been launched.

May I reserve a spot to read "A Simple Bill of Fare for a Christmas Dinner" (1873) by Helen Hunt Jackson?

The Christmas play is by John D. Macdonald -- is it THAT John D. MacDonald (Travis Mcgee guy)?

Edited to add: Nope, not unless he was quite the prodigy, play is c. 1919, THAT MacDonald was born in 1916!
