I just wrapped up recording of "The Precipice" by Goncharov translated to English by M.Bryant. I would like to start the original version, in Russian.

The links to the editions I propose to use are here: https://archive.org/stream/polnoesobranieso04goncuoft#page/n7/mode/2up and https://archive.org/stream/polnoesobranieso05goncuoft#page/n7/mode/2up .

Yes, old orthography. It's going to be a challenge.

Any words before I move to the Launch Pad?

1912 printings, so they're definitely PD. That's about all I have to contribute.

You using both links? Is it two volumes or something?

Yes, two volumes. Five parts: of 18, 22, 23, 14 and 25 chapters...

The translation is only 37 chapters... One can judge the quality of the translation by the chapter count... I really look forward to the original. It's one of those books (and Goncharov is one of the authors) the school system certainly overlooked.

Are you going to do it all in one go or divide it into vols. 1 & 2?

No, the original wasn't divided into volumes, only parts. It was published in two volumes of the "complete works", that's all.

I just did a trial reading of a page, took me exactly 2 minutes (final MP3). Part 1 and 2 have 458 pages, which will yield about 900 minutes (15 hours), parts 3, 4 and 5 have 545 pages, which means ~1100 minutes (18 h 20').

That means about 2000 minutes running time for the book. If I am correct in supposing that a recorded minute requires from six to eight minutes for doing the recording and editing, then I'm in for 12 to 16 thousand minutes of work. :) One and a half man-months (assuming 40 hour weeks). :hmm:

I haven't done the arithmetic , but in case you don't know, 255 is the maximum no of sections Archive can handle , so if it's over that you will have to split it or amalgamated some of your sections.
As a personal thought , if it's already in 2 parts, reading it that way is not a bad idea, with advantages to you (you get something finished quicker , and to the listener - really big zip files have more chance to develop faults when downloading.
