(SOLO) MARK TWAIN, A BIOGRAPHY by Albert Bigelow Paine (1861 - 1937)- VOLUME I, Part 1: 1835-1866 & Part 2: 1866-1875.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/mark-twain-a-biography-volume-1-by-albert-bigelow-paine/
This work has been considered the "go-to" bio of Mark Twain for over a hundred years. Albert Bigelow Paine (July 10, 1861 – April 9, 1937) was an American author and biographer best known for his work with Mark Twain. These recordings of Paine's exhaustive biography cover Twain's personal and literary life in detail, heretofore, unapproached. The published work is divided into 7 sections on three separate recordings:

Recording #1 (This Recording)
-VOLUME I, Part 1: 1835-1866
-VOLUME I, Part 2: 1866-1875

Recording #2
-VOLUME II, Part 1: 1875-1886
-VOLUME II, Part 2: 1886-1900

Recording #3
-VOLUME III, Part 1: 1900-1907
-VOLUME III, Part 2: 1907-1910
-Appendixes

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): wordperfect

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I realize this project may be too big for ONE listing.
If that's the case...I'll need to divide it into several parts.
Please let me know the limitations you follow.

Thanks!

John,

I can MC this for you.

MW is set up.

Based on past problems, please limit each section to about 60 minutes with no more than 256 sections (including section 0) per project. After taking a quick look at the table of contents I would recommend recording each volume separately (Vol 1, Vol 2, Vol 3) this will leave you room in the MW to split any sections into part 1/part 2 if you need to. I have set the MW up with 256 sections, and will delete the extras when it comes time to catalog.

David ,
Thanks so much!!
I like how you’re suggesting the project be divided up. Would that mean that each part would stand alone on the archive?

John,

Yes, each would stand alone. We can add hyperlinks to each catalog/Archive page pointing to the others.

OK
I'll look it all over and divide it up into logical sections...
Probably 7 separate listings:

Appendixes
"Morality" is doing what's right regardless of what you're told!
"Obedience" is doing what is told, regardless of what is right!

Can you suggest a filename progression...like:

marktwainabiography-1_00_paine_128kb.mp3
marktwainabiography-1_01_paine_128kb.mp3
.
.
.
.marktwainabiography-1_53_paine_128kb.mp3

then the next listing would start with:
marktwainabiography-2_01_paine_128kb.mp3
OR
can it start with the chapter number "54"??????...
marktwainabiography-1_54_paine_128kb.mp3

"Obedience" is doing what is told, regardless of what is right!

John,

It is better to use
marktwainabiography-1_00_paine_128kb.mp3
marktwainabiography-1_01_paine_128kb.mp3
.
.
.
marktwainabiography-1_53_paine_128kb.mp3

then the next listing would start with:
marktwainabiography-2_01_paine_128kb.mp3
so that the section numbers in each MW match the numbers in the file names. Trying to remember if section 3 is supposed to be number 54 or number 55 gets complicated after a while.

For now just marktwainabiography-1_##_paine_128kb.mp3 until it is time to start a new project. With times between 15 and 60 minutes for 256 sections you can record 64-256 hours before we need to start a new project.

but do you agree that this starting project should only include VOLUME I, Part 1: 1835-1866 ????

which is only 54 "chapters" (including the intro)

THEN the next project would be
"VOLUME I, Part 2: 1866-1875"
which is 51 "chapters"

etc....

I know we don't have a DPL yet...but I've sent in "section 0" anyway, just to be ready to go!

John,

The choice is yours on whether to separate Volume one onto 2 parts/projects or do them together one one project. Both ways separate the text at a logical point.

I plan to leave this in the Launch Pad for a little longer in hopes of attracting a DPL.

Hi Helen,
Thanks for jumping on board .!!!

We still are figuring out exactly what will be in this first project.
I'm beginning to think that we can fit Volume 1 parts 1 AND 2 into this
And then go on from there.
I'll have to re-do the open though, to announce both parts.

We'll see how the timings go.

Welcome, Helen - you should have access to the MW.

John, please watch the ending of your file names, the one you uploaded ends in _128kb.mp3.mp3 and not _128kb.mp3

I am moving this project to Going Solo now that we have a DPL.
