excellent job, Todd, and I especially commend you for your proficiency in Mandarin. (did you get help or do you speak it ?) Though I don't know anything about the Chinese language, your mou examples sounded very convincing to me. I enjoyed listening to this section particularly since I am always interested in languages.

As for the yellow jacket ceremony....not something I would have relished. I hate shopping for new clothes because I don't like to try on several outfits before finding the one that fits  So this ceremony would have been very annoying to me.

And finally I learnt a new English word: lorcha, I had to look it up in wikipedia to know what this ship looked like.

all three sections PL ok.

Thanks !

Lorcha is not an English boat word I'd ever heard of, and as a ship builder, I would have! Don't know what language it is from.

My Mandarin is entirely made up. Only Mandarin I know is mandarin oranges. Glad it was acceptable!

Thanks, Todd

checked up on it, it's from the Portuguese. Of course they would know about ships, their fleets have been famous.
Only Mandarin I know is mandarin oranges.
 priceless !

all right, I just listened to your section. Very interesting, I didn't know one could enter the buddha statue and even climb up a ladder to his shoulders 8-) Your voice has an almost dreamy quality which fits the description of the peaceful statue here very well. I liked it very much. Also no textual errors found.

However, unfortunately I found some technical errors :(

> volume is only 82.3 dB, we need something more around 89 dB. Could you please amplify by 6 dB ? There are two peaks between 2:15 and 2:19 which will clip if you amplify that much, so either you reduce the volume in that part first or you tick the box "allow clipping". It's not recommended as it can distort the sound, but if there are only two small peaks, it won't matter so much

> you have a variable bitrate, we need a constant bitrate of 128 kbps. Do you work with Audacity ? Normally the settings should remain saved once you set them correctly. Did you maybe manually change them or do an upgrade ? :hmm:

In any case, could you reupload the file with the correct volume and bitrate please ? If you have trouble how to change the settings, please tell me what program you are working with and we'll find someone who can help out, in case you don't have Audacity.

Thank you

thank you Lynda :) the one note is perfectly edited out and the footnote is added. Still, I would need another correction concerning this same footnote (sorry :( )

> at 8:53: the footnote has been inserted in the wrong spot, after "nobori", but it belongs to "ujigami". Could you cut it out at 8:58-9:01 and place it to 8:53 please ?

> since you have to reupload anyway, I would like to ask a second correction as well. I had a second look at the preceding footnote and I think it sounds better if you place it only after the entire sentence is finished. So please cut out the entire footnote from exactly 3:43-4:31 and place it right after "on behalf of someone seriously ill". That way the sentence doesn't get broken by the extremely long footnote where the listeners may have forgotten the beginning of the sentence already LOL

sorry for not catching that earlier. Thank you. You are mentioning volunteer work...if you are seriously tied up right now and can't make time for the corrections, just let me know, I can also correct it on my computer, since it doesn't involve any new readings. I'm sure Jim wouldn't mind Spot PLing my corrections. :)

Hi, I use Audacity. I tried to fix the volume and bitrate.
Here is the reupload: https://librivox.org/uploads/kitty/worldstory_volume01_094_tappan_128kb.mp3
Time 3:57

I have section 79 too. https://librivox.org/uploads/kitty/worldstory_volume01_079_tappan_128kb.mp3
Time 9:43
Do you think I should rerecord this due to the flow?

Thank you

thank you for those two files, Nicky. It's a bit late here to PL but I will do it tomorrow, promised. Updating MW for the moment.

thank you, this section is now PL ok. And congratulations for being the person who finished the 100th section in this project

I noticed some difference in sound near the end of the section, but no need to re-record. The difference is startling a little bit in the first sentence when it happens, but then the listener gets used to to the new sound and all is well till the end. There is a bit of a rumbling background noise in some sentences, like water flowing through pipes maybe ? :hmm: But also not so disturbing than to warrant a re-record. Maybe you could check the source of that noise though and try to lessen it in your next recordings, if possible,

I only have a few notes which you would need to correct:

> at 0:21: for the longer sections we need the full disclaimer and you forgot a part of it: please insert: "The World’s Story, Volume I: China, Japan and the Islands of the Pacific, edited by Eva March Tappan. Section 79" and then start with the title and story

> at 4:15: (p. 236) "the Hermit Kingdom" - I hear "Kermit", maybe it's better to correct that on, it sounds a bit funny  wouldn't want to offend anybody

> at 5:26: (p. 236) stumble and repeat "innovations", that stumble part can easily be cut out without a re-read.

thank you Nicky ! good job again.
