Nicholas Murray Butler (April 2, 1862 – December 7, 1947) was an American philosopher, diplomat, and educator. Butler was president of Columbia University, president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The average monthly salary of men teachers in the common schools was $45.16 in 1897-98; that of the women teachers was $38.74. The common school expenditure per capita of population was $2.67; for each pupil. an overwhelming proportion of the illiterates are found among the negroes and among the immigrants.
