Discovery and Exploration of the Mississippi Valley by John Gilmary Shea (1824 - 1892).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/discovery-and-exploration-of-the-mississippi-valley-by-john-gilmary-shea/
"It has long been a desideratum to have in English the early narratives, of the discovery and exploration of the Mississippi. Marquette's map and voyage have indeed appeared, but the narrative varies in no small degree from the authentic manuscript, and the map is not at all a copy of that still preserved, as it came from the hand of the great explorer. These published from original manuscripts, and accompanied by the narratives of the missionaries in La Salle's expedition, are now first presented in an accessible shape, and complete the annals of the exploration.

The life of Marquette, and the history of the exploration itself, are the result of many years study of the early Spanish and French authorities, both printed and manuscript, some of which have never before been consulted." ( the Author)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://archive.org/details/cihm_42407
Note! PDF page numbers in the Magic Window are NOT the book's page numbers, but the pages of the PDF document.
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

You may. Glad you like it!

I assume, then, you mean sections 0-6 for a total of 7 sections, covering all of Marquette's life. Correct me if I'm wrong. :)

What would you think of me soloing this book....would you still PL? I have always wanted to try a solo, and this would be a great book to do!

So you'd be filling in the Magic Window when the sections are uploaded, and all I'd do is PL (and catalog it)?

It's a deal! 8-)

The biggest difference in the first post between group projects and solos is that you can use the shortened intro on all but the first section when you're doing a solo. I could just modify the first post to give you that wording and not worry about the "how to claim" stuff that will still be there. And then I'd give you access to the Magic Window, and answer your questions on how to work with it.

Are you ready to take the plunge, then?

Yippee!! I've added you as BC. I'll fix up the intro wording next.

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked below:
Instructions for Soloists

Videos showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

I've entered the first two chapters for you as an example. You can fill in the rest.

When you submit a chapter, put the file duration in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.

Oh, and if you want to split a couple of those longer chapters further down the section list, we can do that, too. :)

OK, I put in the wording for the subsequent chapters. Now I'm going to move this from Readers Wanted to Going Solo. 8-)
