Tales of the Cities, by Various.

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/collection-tales-of-the-cities/
This is a collection of city stories, fiction or non-fiction, in English and published before 1923. (Summary by BellonaTimes.)
  1. How to submit a story, and 'how it all works' here
Please select and record any story about a city, non-fiction or fiction, in the public domain. Try to stick to works that run less than 60 minutes. There is no need to "sign-up" before recording... as long as the work is clearly in the public domain, just start recording. Multiple versions are always welcome, so don't worry whether someone else has recorded your selection already; we're happy to hear your version too. :)

See point 4 for links to good sources to look for city stories.

Please note: BellonaTimes will continue this as a solo project

Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which story you are submitting to the collection. Please include all this information:

    • link to the text source
    • author name
    • title of the story
    • duration (runtime) of the file
    • if this is your first recording: how you would like to be listed in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal web site/blog.

Read points 5. to 7. below for what to do before, during and after your recording, and how to send your file.
  2. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline?
The target completion date for this project is October 15, 2010.[/b]
  4. Where do I find text?
    Suggestions:

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: Standard

    MAGIC WINDOW:

    (BC admin)
  5. BEFORE recording:
    Please check the Recording Notes:
    http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:

    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  6. DURING recording:
Please leave no more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of your recording!

Make sure you add this to the beginning and end of your recording:
    Start of recording (Intro)
    • "[Title of story] - This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
      "Recording by [your name]"
    • Say:
"Title, by Author. [Translated by [translator]]."
    End of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      End of [Section]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Please leave 5 seconds silence at the end of your recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes!

Also, please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  7. AFTER recording:
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new
(free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity (Mac/Win) has much improved noise-cleaning. See this
    LibriVox wiki page
    for a complete guide.

    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    citytales_titleinoneword_authorsurname.mp3 (all lower-case) (e.g. citytales_voicecity_henry.mp3)

    ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a
message). Please mind upper and lower case!

    Title: [Title of Story]
    Artist: Author name
    Album: Tales of the Cities

    i.e.:
    Title: Voice of the City
    Artist: O. Henry
    Album: Tales of the Cities

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

    Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file.
Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader (when your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread):
      http://upload.librivox.org
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: lz - lezer
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To

      Send Your Recording wiki page
      .

Hi BT

You always have such interesting ideas :D
I guess the readers choose a text, right? In that case I would like to read The Catacombs of Paris, by Neil Wynn Williams, link here: http://www.archive.org/stream/parisasseenandd01singgoog#page/n12/mode/1up
I cannot find his death date, but I guess it is safe even for us in EU?

Hello BT,
MW in place.
I presumed the same as neckertb, that you wanted to do a collection where readers choose their own material, you seem to have a preference for such projects. ;) However, you used the template for regular group projects. This made the first post very confusing (it talked about "claiming sections", and "sending in recordings within 2 months of claiming" etc etc). I have now re-worked your first post to fit with a collection of this sort.
(Perhaps for the next collection you can do this yourself?)

I've also made a suggestion for a different mp3 name, and suggest leaving out the section number from the ID3 tags, since I presume readers will not know their section number before recording. Or do you want them to make their suggestions before recording? If so, could you put something in the first post about that?

We're all done here now - let's move to Short Works!
Good luck, and have fun!

Thanks, neckert; MW updated with both of our story bookmarks.

Thanks Lezer, what you have done is fine. I'm a little under the weather -- unexpected family visitor over the weekend. Instead of flowers or a nice brisket, I get low-grade fever.

I just PL'ed Section 1 The Catacombs of Paris and that is PL OK!

Wonderfully read. A solemn and creepy account of the catacombs.

Thanks. I've got four pieces done that I need to edit. One, by Theophile Gautier, is a pretty snippy account of London in the late 1800's.

Section 3 is PL OK!

Section 6 is PL OK!

Section 1 has one small glitch. At 6:46 there's a repeat “See Mr Arliss and you will do this.”

The file is great otherwise.

Another intriguing project, :)
