That's still OK - and if possible it is better to have a file per book - well I think so anyhow - but some books are gigantic and we are always getting error reports for gigantic zip files so 3 vols of Herodotus would be pushing the limits I suspect for those with slow downloads to get without any drop outs

There's no way to tell, really, I think. I decided 300 was my limit, but if you used 400 mb for some, I'd say let's wait for people to complain that they cannot download before redoing them. It might not be a problem at all. I find the files downloadable enough. I've just had a look at one title for an example: the M4B file in 32 kb is 30 mb, the one in 64 is 111 and the zip file for the entire book is 130. So no matter what, it looks like the M4b is smaller than the zip.

Hi all,

While you're talking about how big you should limit m4bs too, you might want to consider this post from the Chapter & Verse guy which indicates that there are playback problems on older iPods for audiobooks that are too long.

The problems were originally discovered by the Mac Audiobook Builder developers and reported to Apple who apparently fixed it on later iPods.

http://lodensoftware.com/forum/index.php?topic=5.0

The conclusion is that it depends on the sample rate:
  • Sample rate of 8.0 kHz = 22.6 hrs max
  • Sample rate of 12.0 kHz = 15.0 hrs max
  • Sample rate of 16.0 kHz = 11.3 hrs max
  • Sample rate of 22.05 kHz = 8.2 hrs max
  • Sample rate of 24.0 kHz = 7.5 hrs max
  • Sample rate of 32.0 kHz = 5.6 hrs max
  • Sample rate of 44.1 kHz = 4.1 hrs max
  • Sample rate of 48.0 kHz = 3.8 hrs max

Anne, thanks for the fixing, I'll try not to skip that step anymore.

Phil, thanks for the input. I have to admit I'm listening to M4B on my iPhone, and have had no problems, so I assumed everything was fine.
I'm using 64, so I guess I should make parts less than 3 hours long to be on the safe side...
We might have a problem with the ones I've done already, but I tend to say we should wait for error reports (if any). How many people still have old iPods?
What do you think, Anne?

Nadine, 64 is the bit-rate. The table refers to sample rate (frequency).

Dah! *slaps her head* I guess everyone knows now that I have no clue what I'm doing?

Anyway, mine are 32 then. That still means we could have a problem for some of the ones I made...

For me the same.
But indeed, let's wait for the error reports to come in.

Assuming we keep the same sample rate as Librivox , then under 400 is OK - and that is what we have been doing as far as I know - so lets wait till someone has problems - so far the only ones we have had are upload problems.
