This thread has been locked and will be continued here because we are having some software problems with very long threads and don't want any posts to become unreadable. Apologies for the inconvenience. - admin, Oct 15 2010

After 36 pages it was about time for a new thread ;-)

LibriVox CD covers can be downloaded here:
http://www.archive.org/details/librivox_cd_covers
and here:

and here:

Quick guide to creating CD covers:

1. First, download a template so you have the exact measures.

http://www.archive.org/download/librivox_cd_covers/templates/CDcover_template_groupbw.doc

http://www.archive.org/download/librivox_cd_covers/templates/CDcover_template_groupbw.rtf

http://www.archive.org/download/librivox_cd_covers/templates/CDcover_template_solobw.doc

http://www.archive.org/download/librivox_cd_covers/templates/CDcover_template_solobw.rtf

And some Origami templates:

http://www.archive.org/download/librivox_cd_covers/templates/OrigamiCdCase.pdf

http://www.archive.org/download/librivox_cd_covers/templates/OrigamiCdCaseFoldLayout.pdf

And we have zip-files with templates (Word and Open Office) for normal jewel case, little booklets and Origami paper cases. They have a suggestion for LibriVox small print.

http://www.archive.org/download/librivox_cd_covers/templates/CdCoverTemplatesOpenoffice.zip

http://www.archive.org/download/librivox_cd_covers/templates/CdCoverTemplatesWord.zip

Make extra sure the picture you use is in the public domain!

2. Have a look at our Wiki page for more templates, infos and picture sources: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/CD_Covers
3. Be creative :D
4. Resize your picture to 300x300 pixels and name it: book_title_yymm.jpg (yymm = date = yearyearmonthmonth) Drop articles.
5. Resize it again to 150x150 pixel and name it: book_title_yymm_thumb.jpg
6. Use your downloaded template to make a Jewel Case inlay (front and back) in pdf format and name it: book_title_yymm.pdf.
You can copy the catalog description to the back side. A list of the files with the chapter titles and names of the readers would be nice (but not obligatory).
7. Please put all your files in one zip. When you have done more than one cover, all files should go into the same zip.
8. Upload your zip file here: http://drop.io/librivox (click on the "Add" button in the uper left corner) or to your personal webspace.
9. Post your masterpiece here in the thread and wait for an Admin to add it to the catalog. Include a link to the book's Librivox catalog page in your post.
10. Admire the result on http://www.archive.org/details/LibrivoxCdCovers7

Please be consistent with your file names. Make sure that they really are:
book_title_yymm.jpg
book_title_yymm_thumb.jpg
book_title_yymm.pdf.

and not
Book_title_yymm.jpg
book_title_thumb_yymm.jpg
book Title_yymm.pdf.

The code for Archive and the catalog pages are generated automatically and it doesn't work if one file names doesn't match the others or if the _thumb is at the wrong place. It's hard to spot the mistake in a list of 9 or more files.

If you fell like it, you can generate the code yourself. It's very easy.
Go the this page: http://librivox.nl/librivoxcovers.htm
Fill in file name, title and URL, click the Add code button.
Copy the two sets of code into your post here.

Your help would be very much appreciated! :D

Useful software:

Gimp http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program.

Digifoto http://www.chip.de/downloads/DigiFoto_13013697.html It can do layers. Downside: The adding-text-tool is very poor.

IrfanView http://www.irfanview.de/ Image view/resize/convert/screen shot and many more.

PDFCreator http://www.freeware.de/download/pdfcreator_11310.html A sort of false printer. You click "print" and choose PDFCreator as printer and get a pdf. To get the result of a cover design program into a pdf.
CutePDF http://download.cnet.com/CutePDF-Writer/3000-6675_4-10206470.html does the same.

A free utility available for Microsoft Windows to convert to pdf: http://www.primopdf.com/index.aspx

A free software to zip your files:
http://www.izarc.org/

Do you know more useful software? Tell us, they will be added here.

Have you heard about the Origami paper cases?
I absolutely love them. They are so handy and easy to make.

I've put in the drop-box covers for The House of Mirth, Summer, The Age of Innocence, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Alexander the Great, and Hospital Sketches. Let me know if there are any problems.

Thank you, Kate. They are beautiful!
Unfortunately I can only start to work on them tomorrow or Thursday.

If any other admin can pick them up sooner, don't be shy.

I give up for now.
I uploaded the seven new covers and they appear in the tree root.
Then I click 'Update Item!', the screen with Please wait while we make your changes live... appears, but doesn't go away.
When I try to access the new files, Archive says they do not exist.

I will retry later this evening.

It's not your covers Kathryn, It's Archive.org.

Seven covers on Archive.org and in the catalog.

Deleted six covers from drop.io.

@Hokuspokus: Could you please check The House of Mirth. This book now has two covers, and I'm not sure I handled that well.

And added the two new ones to Archive.org and the catalog.
Deleted them from the drop.

Thanks Kathryn, I love them all!

Question: When I label the files, do you want the word "A" or "The" at the beginning or the end? For instance:
The_Book_Title
or
Book_Title,_The

Kate,
simply drop the articel. Short links are easier to deal with.

Bart,
House of Mirth was a bit tricky. It had some <div> thing after the audio files of each chapter. I replaced them with <br> and it worked.
Now we have two projects with two covers. I post them here for reference:
http://librivox.org/the-house-of-mirth-by-edith-wharton/
http://librivox.org/tom-sawyer-by-mark-twain/

And I cleaned up the mess I left with Scarlet Pimpernel. All well.
Thank you.

Wow those look nice! It seems we have lots of room beside the recordings for lots of cover art. I like how they look on the page.
