People Like That by Kate Langley Bosher. (1865-1932)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page:

http://librivox.org/people-like-that-by-kate-langley-bosher/

A single woman from a family that is well-off, buys a house at a place that is looked down upon and disapproved by her family and friends alike. Her reason - she wants to live the life of and know people like that. (This book's got one of the cutest romantic endings I've ever read). What is surprising is this book is in the PD - there are quite a few modern expressions and comparatively less quaint, out-of-fashion expressions. (Summary by Neeru Iyer)
  • Target completion date: July 2010
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/12972/12972.txt
  • Type of proof-listening required: Standard

See the FAQ in the Listeners/Editors Wanted forum for information, and copy from there the description of the type of proof-listening needed for this project. - Standard Proof-listening

-- Do the intro and disclaimer match the instructions in the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there any long silences or pauses that ought to be edited out? If so, note the time.
-- Are there any repeats, or serious stumbles that ought to be edited out? If so, note the words and the time.
-- Is there excessive background noise, a constant hiss or buzz that detracts from the reading?
-- Did you need to turn your volume up unusually high to listen to the recording? (Or did you find the recording too loud?)
-- Are the correct closing words used at the end of the recording, as per the first post of the project thread?
-- Are there 5 seconds of silence (10 if the recording is more than 30 minutes long) at the end of the file?

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project will be opened up to a group project as soon as a Book Coordinator can be found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to have it re-instated).

I'm happy to work with you as well. We'll hang out here for a day or so to see if anyone comes by and wants to be the proof listener for your project. If not, no problem we can advertise for one once you get a few files uploaded in the Listeners Wanted forum.

Enjoy your new project. :D

Hi All,
Do you need a DPL?

I will do it unless someone else has already claimed it.
Thanks.

Ahem, Brenda, I really, really wanted to start on this one today, but ended up lazily whiling away my time. I'm in love with the male protagonist of this book *sigh* At least for HIS sake, I'm bound to start tomorrow! :D
Thank you so much for taking up the PLing. :)

Ahem! Neeru,

No Problem.

It is Memorial Day here and a long vacation weekend for us.

We planted a large vegetable garden and put in our flower beds, so I have not had much time to listen this weekend, but will be waiting for this good story!

Thanks.

Hi Brenda!

Long vacation weekend - YAY! Hope you had a great weekend :)
Flower-beds - Double YAY! :D So, how has everything come out? All the garden and all? :) What flowers have you got?

I finally uploaded Chapter 1.

bp, I haven't used different voices or accents or ANYTHING AT ALL to differentiate between the conversing characters. Please let me know if you cannot identify who is speaking what. :D When I listened to my own recording(masochism, yeah), I already knew who was saying what, so I didn't know if it was all right.

Neeru,
Chapter 1 is just fine. Well Read! The dialogue is perfectly clear, that is, who is speaking.
PL OK! :D

If Mary will add my name to the Magic Window I can post to the PL Notes.

We have...Roses, Lilies, Tiger Lilies, Hostas, Day Lilies, Herbs, Sweet William, Red Salvia, Pink Geraniums, Marigolds, Morning Glories, Nasturtiums, Gladioli, Violets, Daisies, Foxglove, and Peonies....I may have forgotten something...we also have a few apple trees.

In the vegetable garden, we planted tomatoes, sweet corn, and I will plant some blue Peruvian corn shortly at a distance from the sweet corn to prevent cross pollination, bush green beans and pole beans, cucumbers, cantaloupe, Mixed greens, and later I will plant turnips....I love peppers but can not eat them. I also meant to get some potatoes planted, but it was too cold and wet until just about a week ago... I also have hot weather peas....

Do you have gardens?

Looking forward to the next chapters!

WHOA! OH MY GOD, you must have really huge gardens. And extremely colorful, too :D That is SO LOVELY, having so much of open space and vegetation around you. Well, I'd like a garden, even a small one, with just a few flowers, but I've got an apartment in the 2nd floor, and just a few un-pretty trees around. :(

ME TOO! :) This is such an interesting read!
