Can i not use my vista voice recorder and send the file or something. I am not the most technical person and with my impairment makes using something like that impossible. I would like to just send a story read and have someone else deal with the technical side. Otherwise I will have to withdraw and volunteer some other way. Any thoughts?

Hi

I was hoping someone more technically savvy than me would come along but here goes .
I don't know anything about the format your recorder uses or how you would send it to us  so would you be able to tell us ? And that would give us a better idea . I'd be happy to help with your files if there is a way I can.

OK, just did a quick search - I think this is some voice recognition software included in Windows Vista. Output .wmv at 96kbps only according to this: http://www.jakeludington.com/windows_vista/20060524_windows_vista_sound_recorder.html

Only recording, no editing.

I use a Mac, so can't look into this further. - Have edited the subject to see if anyone else 'bites.'

I do consider myself relatively tech-savvy, but also cannot figure out Audacity. However, the sound recorder that comes with Vista is too simplistic for my tastes.

Does anyone know of a free program that has the settings we need to do librivox recordings, but just works in a straight-forward manner? I can handle setting the settings and all, but not the multi-track business. I just want to be able to read, make a mistake, back up to right before the mistake and snip off the end, so I can continue from that spot.

XOXO,
Aina

THat is possible with the 1.3 versions of Audacity - which do appear to be stable these days. It has added the ability to continue to record at the end of the existing track by pressing <shift> and the record button.

Having said that I think you will find that most peole find the best way to handle "errors" is to read the phrase / sentence again and continue to the end , then go back and listen and chop out the repeats - some mark the repeat with a tongue click or leave a space. But everyone does what suits them best :D - i

WavePad is pretty straight forward to me. The free version of it has all one needs for LV's recordings.

Tiny and effective. http://mpesch3.de1.cc/mp3dc.html Records straight to MP3. Editing takes a little practice, and it's very basic, but it's what I used for all my LibriVoxing editing for my first year or more, and the program is still what I record with.
There's honestly no such thing as a stupid question -- but I'm afraid I can't rule out giving a stupid answer : : To Posterity and Beyond!

We each learn differently, and my thoughts were along the lines of are you a visual or kinaesthic learner (ie see or do?).
If so, you might be able to learn from some of the better youtube video's on audacity.

(I can't make head nor tail of some of the "user guides" unless they're visual.

How to record Poetry with Audacity

Should I make a booboo or get my tongue tied in the middle of the poem...
  • I stop, wait 3 seconds so there's a large gap in the waveforms (easy to spot my error)...
Then read the entire line again.
Hope that helps.

This lady (Voiceover1) on youtube has made some very good Audacity tutorials for the youtube community. She has a very clear voice. :D :D

You don't really have to deal with the different tracks in audacity. You can just record them as normal from the end of the last track (place the cursor there) and go on as normal. When you export as Mp3, it puts them on one track for you.

Unfortunately, there are lots more complex recording programs out there, but I don't know of any simpler.

I also hate the tech parts of this--maybe that's why we all like books? But with a little play, it's very simple. Just remember that cntrl z is your best friend (undo), save a lot, and good luck!!
