My recommendation is The Railway Children, as read by Karen Savage.
http://librivox.org/railway-children-by-e-nesbit/
I'd never want to read this aloud to anyone if I could give them her recording instead, and I've been known to say that I don't think Edith Nesbit herself could have read it better. This goes down among my favorite recordings of all times.

Something short? I just stumbled across this little, 20 min. gem yesterday:
http://librivox.org/porcelain-and-pink-by-f-scott-fitzgerald/
It's a one-act drama that I think is really funny, and it definitely deserves more than the louse 2500 downloads it had so far!

I just loved Ruth's (RuthieG) wonderful rendition of Cleek: The Man of the Forty Faces by Thomas W. Hanshew - such a fun mystery, and very well put together with its sub-plots.
Also really enjoyed Elizabeth Klett's (gloriana) reading of Edith Wharton's The Glimpses of the Moon.

Thank you, Gesine. If it is half as much fun to listen to as it was to record, that is good enough for me.
I fully intend to do a third of Cleek's mysteries soon. I think I have rather a soft spot for that man.

Oh good. I just looked on Gutenberg to see if there were any more of his, saw that there were a couple, and was going to petition you to do them! No pressure, but... quickly, please.

I knooooow... but I'm already listening to that now, so you'd better hurry up with another.
I'm having premature withdrawal symptoms.

Oh,
all right then...
But I have to finish old Sherlock first. Perhaps this will spur me into action.

I haven't got time today to do a staff pick post for 4th July, I'm afraid. I spotlighted one on archive, but if anyone else can do the staff picks post today, do please go ahead.

Hi
Can I suggest that the consistently excellent recording of Dickens's Sketches by Boz should find a place in the next Staff Picks? I thought this project showed off LV group collaboration at its best.
Regards
Martin

39 Steps has already been suggested so I will second it.
I would also recommend The Prisoner of Zenda and its sequel Rupert of Hentzau, both solo works by the same wonderful reader.
Finally, I would suggest King Soloman's Mines.

I'll suggest Monsieur Lecoq, read by ezwa, for the non-English works.

I will take care of the 'Staff Picks' over at archive.org for a while. I would like to update them once a month, starting with next month. Interestingly, I am better at coming up with non-fiction stuff, so I would appreciate some help with the fictional side of Librivox. I'd like to have it a bit thematic on top of that
Please post in the thread if you have a (fiction) suggestion for
October 2010 - 'Autumn Leaves'
Thanks!
