Book suggestions in languages other than English
Yes, sure, I'll put it in. Wiki editing is by request only (because we were utterly deluged by spam when it was open access.) Though, granting access might take a while, since Ruth's not able to do it right now.
There's honestly no such thing as a stupid question -- but I'm afraid I can't rule out giving a stupid answer : : To Posterity and Beyond!
I've just made an interesting discovery. About an hour ago I uploaded a short story in Polish, and just after doing that I started searching for other interesting short stories with an eye to recording at least one of them. I went to the page I mentioned earlier in the thread and had a look. Among the names of well-known writers of prose I noticed one that I didn't know: Stefan Grabiński.
I accessed Wikipedia where I found out that Grabiński specialised in horror stories and that Americans, after reading the translation of one of his collections gave him a nickname "Polish Poe" Doesn't that sound exciting? Better still, part of his works can be recorded for LV, as 5 of his collections were written before 1923 (1918, 1919, 1920, 2x1922).
Tomorrow I'm going to read some of these stories to see which one(s) to record. I'm so excited

That's fantastic, Piotr!
(Please double-check the source-texts before recording ... you'll need to be sure that it's the original text as it was published, and not edited later.)

OK, that got me thinking. How can I actually check that it was not changed?(Please double-check the source-texts before recording ... you'll need to be sure that it's the original text as it was published, and not edited later.)
I found the stories on the website with PD texts I mentioned earlier in this thread. According to the note I found there, the texts are based on a 1950 edition of collected works of Grabiński. Apparently the edition included also a preface and an afterword, but these were not included on the website, as they were obviously later additions and thus not PD.
I am glad I found this thread. If the works from this website are all acceptable, then perhaps my 'quest' from this thread: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=37543 ends right here?Cori wrote:Yes, we've used that source before -- I remember the retro HTML look of the page. Seems okay to me (not that I'm a lawyer, etc. and I'd now stick to the pre-'23 US guideline just to be double-sure it's okay.)
My problem was that they say the "Przygody Sindbada Zeglarza" by Lesmian are based on the 1957 edition. I've bought the scans of the first 5 pages of 1957 edition to see if it says anything about copyright (it doesn't). I've contacted Stanford Uni and Google Books about availability (or possible purchase) of the 1913 scan but had no luck.
But if LV says that the above source is ok - well, is it? Does a publishing house have a right to change wording in a literary piece?
warm regards
Nina
I don't see any Hindi books in the catalogue, nor do I know any current readers who speak Hindi. That is not to say there are none, I just don't know of any.
One of the problems is determining the public domain status of such works. See my reply in your other thread (which I haven't done yet, but am just about to write).

"¡CAIÑGAT CAYO! Sa mañga masasamang libro't, casulatan" (Be as slippery as an eel! For the vile books and pamphlets) by Fr. José Rodriguez would be a good addition to the catalogue.
This book created quite a stir among the friars and the revolutionaries in my country about a century ago.

It definitely would, April! I don't know what an average word count per minute is for Tagalog ... if it were English, it'd be about a 20-30min recording. A nice little solo for someone..? (since there aren't any multilingual non-fiction collections at the moment.)

I would love to see a New Testament in Tagalog. I believe Ang Dating Biblia, from 1905, is in the public domain. There are most certainly other versions, although I don't see any on Gutenberg. The Philippine Bible Society would almost certainly assist us. Tagalog is something I cannot read well enough to record, but an audio Tagalog New Testament is something I would treasure and share extensively.
