Hey folks, here's a design challenge for graphic designers in the group:

1. someone asked for a banner to put up on their site to promote podcasts without ad budgets ... does anyone have the graphic design wherewithal to do something like that for librivox?

2. chicklet(? is this the right term?): "I read 4 librivox"

any takers?

How about these? I used a variety of standard sizes; hope some of them fit people's page designs.

Please do not link to them on my site--make copies locally on your server.

If anyone else wants to make buttons and banners, and would like to incorporate the fonts and colors we use on the site, here are the details:

Mixage Md ITC ('Libri')
TheSans Bold ('Vox')

chartreuse is #D4EE78
teal is #3E5B58

I found a list of standard web ad sizes here: http://www.iab.net/standards/adunits.asp

But feel free to use whatever fonts, sizes, and colors you like!

Using Kristen's colour scheme and http://www.lucazappa.com/brilliantMaker/buttonImage.php I've run up a few dead simple 80x15's (the small button above is just a little bit bigger than the others I use)

Just like Kristen says, please make a copy on your server if you use them:

Using that website, it's easy to generate buttons to your heart's content.

Wow that is one nifty website. Wish I'd known about that a long time ago! I'm going to go make a gutenberg button. Thanks for the 80x15 buttons, Alex. That's juuuuust right.

Kara

edit: here's my gutenberg button, grab it if you want! Image

Ah, of course. I'd forgotten about the auto generator for those buttons. Thanks for making all those, Alex.

I have the Photoshop files from the guy who designed those little buttons, a friend of mine here in Tokyo. So I used those. But the size has drifted a bit from his design in 2003. Oops.

If I could figure out how to put the pictures in the margins of my Wordpress blog, I'd do it. So frustrating! I have to wait for Alan, and he doesn't have any time. You need PHP to figure that thing out. Grump.

paula, it's quite easy, you don't need php. you are using wordpress for your blog right? here's how you do it.

1. download the file(s) you want to your computer
2. open your wordpress admin box
3. goto "upload"
4. click "browse" & find your file
5. click "upload file"
6. copy the "code to display it"
7. goto manage/files
8. a scary-looking bit of html text will turn up in the editing window.
9. find <div id="sidebar">
10. paste your copied code somewhere under <div id="sidebar">

Alternatively,

Upload the files as described, then go to Links and use the link form to put the URL you want the button to go to in the URI box, and page down to the 'Image location' box and put the URL of the button in there.

If that doesn't make any sense to you just shout...

You guys are life-savers. I couldn't get Hugh's suggestion to work because of a permissions issue, but I followed Alex's directions, and you should see how great it looks! I used the big vertical image. Unfortunately, you seem to have to give the thing a link category, which doesn't really make sense, so I created the category "partners."

See what you think at http://www.writingshow.com.

Thank you so much!!

Sure!

After I did my gutenberg button, I checked to see if there were "official" ones. There are... but I like mine a lot better.
