How to use the Forum
Check out our Forum Guide wiki page. It's a helpful guide for figuring out how to get around this place.
Ways to Volunteer
We have lots of different opportunities if you'd like to participate. Not everyone needs to be a reader. A good place to start would be to visit our wiki for information. Specifically if you want to volunteer for various roles check out How to Volunteer. This will give you a good overview of what you can do, and how to get started.
Want to record?
Newbie Guide to Recording includes information about mics and software and step-by-step stuff for folks who have no idea how to start making a recording. It's also a useful checklist for people who do have an idea, but need the LibriVox details. Tech Specs is for folks who want just the settings, ma'am.
Please -- make your first recording a test recording or something very short from the Short Works forum. Thank you!
Check out the User-Recommended Equipment and Software We Use.
Some volunteers get a little jittery about recording their voices. Don't worry, it's normal. Speaking for myself, I know my recorded voice sounded so different from what I thought, I almost trashed my recordings. A few of our volunteers have written quite a bit of encouraging material, which is located on our wiki as well. Help! What If I Suck?
Picking a chapter
So how do you you actually claim your first chapter? First decide if you want to do a short work or a section from a book. Short Works are usually only a few minutes, like a poem. The full length books usually break up the book into convenient chunks, to be recorded by different people. Read the various threads. Each thread is an individual book, and when you're ready to pick one, click on the "Post Reply" button and let them know which chapter you want. The first post on each thread will give you all the info you need, where to get the book, what chapters are available, and how to name the files.
Need Help?
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Our Help Forum is well stocked with previous questions and experienced volunteers who are more than willing and able to work through many problems ... have a look through and post your own question.
Thanks again for joining up. Happy listening!
