Hi!

I just found out about this venture and registered a couple hours ago. I'll certainly read some chapters of Dracula, but need to get set up and practice just a bit! I also haven't found out where I get the text to read yet, but I still need to look around the site; I'm sure I'll figure it out. Are they pdf files? I've read all the tips and could be ready to start as soon as tomorrow night... ;)

Hi Max! Welcome to Librivox! Here's the text of Dracula:

http://ftp.it.net.au/gutenberg/etext95/dracu13.txt

If I'm reading a short chapter, I'll sometimes copy and paste the text into a word processor and print it out, but more often lately I make my recording software window small and put the word-processed (and font-enlarged) text on the other half of my monitor and read straight off the screen while recording. Saves a tree :)

Have fun reading, and let us know if you need any help at all!

Thanks! I think I've figured things out & I got the text. I'll take Chapters 4, 5, and possibly 6 also - I don't mind doing Mina's letters and stuff. I'll probably take some more chapters afterwards, as long as I have no problems - I have the time.

So true about a tree! ;) I've never done any ID tags and am not even exactly sure what they are, so I may have a question about that, but it's probably in the faq area. I don't have a problem with saving the separate chapters in the mp3 format - I know how to do that part.

I'll get started tomorrow afternoon and evening. 'Nite! Max

ID3 tags are easy. They provide information about the file, and are saved within it (in some mysterious way).

Do you use iTunes? If so, open your finished mp3 in iTunes and hit control/command-i and you'll get a popup. Hit the "info" tab at the top and you'll see a bunch of fields to fill in.

Enter the info as Paula specified and hit "ok". (You can compare to other finished librivox recordings to see what info goes where if you're confused)

I think winamp lets you edit ID3 tag info, and there are many other programs which will, as well.

Have fun!

Thanks for the info! Yes, I do use iTunes so I will save your instructions & go back & save Paula's info.

Btw - just realized I didn't really sign any posts last nite. The max452 is just what I use for aim and user names - I'm Rachel. ;) Thanks again for all the info!

Welcome, Rachel! Goodbye, Max.

I've changed your name in the assignment list.

Do you think Max would like to read for us too?

(Just joking.)

It would have been funny if we'd been expecting to hear a manly Max-type voice and had heard a Rachel instead! Ok I'm REALLY going to stop goofing around and go edit Dracula now :)

Done:

I left a big chunk of silence at the end this time, Paula -- let me know if Real Player likes it better.

I'd be happy to read more if you get impatient waiting to assign them all!

Actually it doesn't matter to me which name is on the assignment list.

Yes, I realized that and it's one of the reasons I thought I better post to let you know. There *are* a couple forums out there where I do go by Max... ;)

I should get my first chapter done tonight. As soon as DH gets out of the way and goes to work (he works swing shift) I'm going to start. I'll just do the first chapter to start and send it - then you (Paula) can let me know if it's okay, or if I need to change anything. My main problem is probably speaking slower and leaving pauses. I will be aware of that though, and don't mind constructive criticism!

Later! Rachel

Kara, Your chapter is just perfect in Real Player. I didn't test it in anything else.

What a great book! So creepy. If I had more time, I'd grab the rest of it for myself.

Does Real Player let you record or is that just for listening? I'm having some problems here - I have an old audio program that quits on me a lot, but does record fairly well. So I decided to try DLing that Audacity program, but finished almost 1/2 a chapter before listening to it as it seemed to work OK. That was a bad idea though, as it came through absolutely loaded with static hiss! I was bummed. I have a pretty decent mic too and haven't had any trouble at all with sound - I've been doing audio books reviews for a podcast.

I wanted to jump right in & get these done and maybe do some more chapters, but I may have to wait until I get my new machine that's on order, as I will then have the Garage Band program. I should have it by the week of Nov 17th, & we have until the end of the year or so, as a dealine right?

I can't wait until I have Garage Band! I have a couple friends that use it and really like it. I guess I'm dumping the free Audacity program and will see what I can do with my old program. If it doesn't work out (these chapters are quite a bit longer that my book reviews) I will certainly have them done around the end of the month.

Rachel, an awful lot of people here use Audacity -- I'll bet one of them can help you until you get Garage Band. Maybe try posting over in the Tips and Tricks --> Recording part of the forum?

If all else fails, you could try downloading the demo of SoundStudio:
http://www.freeverse.com/soundstudio/

It's pricey, but it works very well for me. I don't know in what way the demo is crippled, but if it's good for 30 days that would tide you over :)

Good luck!
