Brain Twister by Mark Phillips.

This project is complete. Visit the catalog page here:
http://librivox.org/brain-twister-by-mark-phillips/

"Mark Phillips" is, or are, two writers: Randall Garrett and Laurence M. Janifer. Their joint pen-name, derived from their middle names (Philip and Mark), was coined soon after their original meeting, at a science-fiction convention. Both men were drunk at the time, which explains a good deal, and only one has ever sobered up. A matter for constant contention between the collaborators is which one.

Originally published as That Sweet Little Old Lady, Brain Twister humorously follows the adventures of FBI agent Kenneth J. Malone as he attempts to unravel the machinations of a telepathic spy. The novella was nominated for the Hugo Award in 1960. (Summary modified from the text and Wikipedia by Catharine Eastman)

Sounds interesting, I think I'll have to eaves-listen to this one. Can't really commit to being a dedicated proofer, as I've two other projects on the burner right now, but I'll pop over for a listen now and again.

Lovely! I probably won't be posting files all that often - I'm a pretty slow recorder. So if you pop in, you know, once every month or two, there *might* be a new file waiting. :)

I'll drop by every couple of weeks or so if I DON'T get an auto-reminder posting! So (with a target date of the end of the year) you may put me down as "dedicated" if you wish. Althogh, if there's anyone else that REALLY wants to deidcate to this one, I'll be more than happy to just eaves-proof.

Fantastic! :D I'll put you down for dedicated PLer. :)

(The end of year is just a hope, at this point, but we'll see what I can do. I've got a good start on the first file, anyway, and hope to have that one up come the end of next week or so, as it's fairly short.)

Hope you enjoy the story. I haven't finished reading it myself yet, but the humor of the prologue and first chapter instantly got my attention. :)

I've D/L'ed the unzipped us-ascii version from PG...I'll try to autoformat it with Word so that I can re'size the window to keep from having to scroll back and forth with the text, and skim through the first bit of it this weekend. :hmm: detailed level P/L....gotta go over to the wiki to check that out, I'm sure you don't mean word perfect....

No, not word-perfect - just little stumbles and stuff like that. (Most of which I hope to have caught before I upload the files!)

Also, if you want to, you can post comments and suggestions on my reading style (basically, any aspect you wish to comment on). I may or may not change it in response to your feedback, but it's good to know what someone else feels 'works,' and what doesn't.

Thanks much for listening!

Got it...and I just checked the wiki, too. I don't even expect a reader to change what I list as "errors", because they may be reading from a different version of the text than I am! (Just happened to me on "Snow-bound - A Winter Idyll"...Laurie Anne found a PD version that matched the reader's printed anthology he was reading from, whild the PG version had two phrases reversed! We left if the way he read it, which is just fine with me.) I usually follow along with the text to catch any missed phrases. If I ever get too detailed for you, jsut say so...I won't be offiended

Since I've already recorded Brain Twister and put it up on archive.org, wouldn't it be more practical to read the second or third book in the series, both of which are also public domain?

Obviously, you can do whatever you want. But so much duplication of effort, when there's so much out there that's unrecorded....

We're pretty cool with multiple versions, even within our own catalogue. See here.

Your reading sounds great, by the way. You've got a wonderfully expressive style.

I'll be interested in listening to your recording (at some point after I've finished my own)!

Had no idea that there was another recording out there. As it's not in our catalog yet, I'm going to proceed. I was browsing through Gutenberg and was completely won over by the first couple of chapters. I'm having a lot of fun so far. :D

Maybe you can do all three and make them a trilogy for LV, Catharine. Just a thought for the future......

Mmmm. I think I might let someone else take care of at least the second one. I read a bit of it, and it didn't grab me the way the first one did. Haven't seen the third yet. :)

The first file is up in the Magic Window! also here:

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/ce/braintwister_00_phillips.mp3

I wasn't sure what exactly to call it. There's this chunk of text before the prologue about the authors, but Gutenberg didn't give it any sort of label. So I didn't either.

Enjoy!

Got it...but proofing will have to wait until I can get the text from PG...I keep getting
503 Service Temporarily Unavailable
Error: could not connect to database server.
Sorry, we are overloaded. Please try again later. Slack times are: 18.00 PM to 8.00 AM EST.
when I go there. :hmm: 18:39 Central US time should be during their slack times...maybe they need to modify their error message to indicate the real slack times!

EDIT: Got it! I downloaded the US ASCII version, not he ISO 8859-1 one...they should be the same, other that a few minor character encodings.
