Help Wanted - Wikipedia Entries

As we have been completing books at a pretty good rate. I have been struggling to keep up with all the Wikipedia entries for the new books. I certianly don't mind keeping this up, but I believe this new system will work better.

As new books are complted the Meta-cordinator will post in this thread. Volunteers may claim a Wikipedia entry by replying. When you have completed your Wikipedia entry, just edit your original message, then the coordinators will remove the posts to keep the thread clean.

Please edit both the author page and also the book/poem page if it exists. Put the link in the external links section where it best fits (sometimes different per author or book).

Examples for Wikipedia enteries are as follows:

Code: Select all

Book on an author page (when a page exists for the book):
*[http://librivox.org/a-connecticut-yankee-in-king-arthurs-court-by-mark-twain/ Free audiobook] of ''[[A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court]]'' from [http://librivox.org/ LibriVox]

Book on a author page (when a page for the book does not exist):
*[http://librivox.org/american-indian-fairy-tales-by-william-trowbridge-larned/ Free audiobook of ''American Indian Fairy Tales''] from [http://librivox.org/ LibriVox]

Book on a book page:
*[http://librivox.org/a-connecticut-yankee-in-king-arthurs-court-by-mark-twain/ Free audiobook] from [http://librivox.org/ LibriVox]

Poem on an author page (when a page does not exist for the Poem - which is typical for a poem):
*[http://librivox.org/the-stolen-white-elephant-by-mark-twain/ Free audiobook of "The Stolen White Elephant"] from [http://librivox.org/ LibriVox]
Editing a Wikipedia page is easy (everyone should learn how even if you aren't going to help keep up pages for Librivox!)

Code: Select all

1. Go to the page you want to edit (typically there is a link to the author off of our catalog pages, which is how I get there easily without searching)
2. Click edit at the top of the page.
3. Edit the page by cutting and pasting the above examples into the external links section (near the bottom of the page) and changing the link and the title of the work. Some editing points:
  a. [[text]] is an internal link to a Wikipedia article
  b. [http://www.link.com text for link] is a link to an external site.
  c. * is the start of bulleted list
  d. ''text'' (double single quotes) empphasizes text (italics which I use for book titles)
4. Click preview until you get good to check your work.
5. Click submit to submit.
I always look at the page I am editing in the most logical manner (as if it was my own page). Most of the time, I group the Librivox links, and if there are other audiobook links I put it with that. Barring that, I stick it at the end.

Also, you get over the fuzzy feeling and start thinking of it as your encyclopedia after a bit. That is the beauty of it.

I will continue to do the ones I can, but this will give others a chance to learn the Wikipedia, and to help in other ways than reading.

Japanese reading of Oku no Hosomichi by Basho: http://librivox.org/oku-no-hosomichi-by-matsuo-bashō/

Would be good if this also went into the Japanese Wikipedia if someone can do it in Japanese.

Please stop. If you continue to use Wikipedia for advertising, you will be blocked from editing. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 12:28, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

What the....??? How is it advertising when our books are free? We're providing a resource, not selling something. Is there any way to respond?

Yeah, but I don't know if it's worth it. The name links to the person who sent the message.

I can't believe it. They removed all of my adds of the link to the various audio recordings.

Bahh!

OK, so I did respond:
I do not understand how you see my referencing to Librivox audiobooks as a problem. It is as much advertising as having the links to Gutenberg e-texts. Did you actually visit any one of the links that were posted? Librivox is a community of volunteers creating audio recordings (released to the public domain) of public domain books. The links to the catalog pages of each work were meant to provide access to the audio recordings to those interested.

ARGHHHH!!! Your response was perfect, hopefully they will be able to reinstate your entries without having to redo them all??

I don't know if I have to redo them all, but at least I have a list of them all on a page. I thought I would have to remember and search through for the ones I'd done because the posts here were deleted. Fortunately that isn't the case.

Nothing has changed so far Hugh. I don't even know if other links that weren't added by me, or were added before I reset the connection the last time, were removed. I only know of the ones that were removed from pages I did with this IP.

I'm waiting for a response from the person who removed the links before I do anything to add them back again.

I sent Mel a note too
--------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Mel,
About three months ago I discovered http://www.LibriVox.org/ where literature in the public domain is read by live human beings into sound files and distributed on the net without cost to the listener. Though still small, there's a growing community of dedicated readers over there who are actually providing quite a surprisingly high-quality service free of charge.

Because of the nature of the Wikipedia, we felt it was appropriate to link completed works to the appropriate entries here. Today however, one of the volunteers who does this received this note:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/70.16.197.123

Though we are certainly advertising the LibriVox site, there's no commerce taking place. We're simply trying to direct Wikipedia users to a place where they can download public domain works for free.

If linking our free public service to the Wikipedia is in violation of your policy, then we'll certainly remove all of the links, but it seemed to us as if we were participating in the spirit of the Wiki.

Peace...
ChipDoc

Perhaps we should always log in to WP when we edit, rather than do it as anonymous users? How about creating a LibriVox user that is used by all who edit for LV?
