Some Books that Aren't in the Public Domain (and why)

In Canada, your death date is 1971 or earlier (50 years). So you can definitely do someone who died in 1933.

Why not? As long as the works are published before 1926, they are PD in the US, and she died more than 50 years ago, so PD in both US and Canada. It should be fine to read most of hers. Just not these two late publications:

The US is 95 years from publication, at least for works first published before 1978. Steinbeck's first novel was 1929, which will leave copyright on 1/1/2025. (I'm not sure where 2023 came from; if he had something published earlier, that would go into the public domain earlier.)

I see on many sites that Bambi is now in the public domain. The book of course. I am always skeptical and am asking for confirmation of this from more knowledgeable people. If this is true, can anyone find a pd text for me to read from that LV would accept? My beanie is spinning in anticipation of recording this book

It's PD in its original German, but not yet in its English translation: "Simon & Schuster published this first English edition in 1928, with illustrations by Kurt Wiese, under the title Bambi: A Life in the Woods."

Two more years.

I don't think we accept Dover reprints.
But the 2nd one is certainly no in my opinion it has a string of copyright dates in it.

Thanks Anne. I am ordering the original book so I can do a scan of the 1926 copyright page. If not, that's fine too. This book was very influential on my brother's thought and I'd like to record it as a sort of memorial to him.

Hi good people. Doctor Doolittle's Zoo became PD last year and I'd like to record it but I'm asking for others to confirm this before I commit to it. It was published in 1925 . Here is the link that was given in this forum https://archive.org/details/20140318-a-5-1/page/n1/mode/2up Note that the copyright shows 1925 but there is another copyright showing 1953.
