Hi Michelle,

Wow, love the enthusiasm! I will enter your claim for those four chapters (note, there's a two month deadline for claims). Please read the first post in this project for everything you need to know about naming and uploading the file, plus what to say at the beginning and end, and how much silence to leave at the start/finish.

I'll put you into the Librivox catalogue as JamminJazz. If you want that name changed later, you can ask any of the admins to do that for you. You can access your catalogue page from your name link in the Magic Window (the list of sections in the first post).

Feel free to ask questions along the way.

Cheers,
I have a question... how is Gissing properly pronounced? Is it a hard G like go or soft G like jello? And in the future for character names etc if we have a pronunciation question should we just post here, or is there a good place to search on the web or? I know we can’t listen to finished chapters for reference so just want to be consistent!

It's Gissing with a hard G. He's named after the British author George Gissing.

Yes, posting here is fine. If we don't have an immediate answer, we'd likely point you at other online sources. It's generally a good idea to post in the thread, as others may have the same question, or there may be unusual pronunciations required for a particular project. I have a dramatic reading that requires that we all pronounce Orpheus as "Orfoos" because that's what the author of this play dictated!

Generally, https://www.howtopronounce.com is pretty good, the dictionaries usually provide pronunciations (e.g., https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Gissing), and of course, there's always YouTube. But even just googling "how to pronounce [word]" will give you several options to choose from.

Does that help?

Cheers,
Winnifred

Just one note on this one: At 4:07, I hear “But it’s so faraway from everywhere that poor Mrs. Santa couldn’t get a servant.” However, there’s no “Mrs.” in the text (this Santa doesn't seem to be married). Could you please snip that out?

Thanks,
snipped.

And now it's perfect!

I'm just finishing up editing through my audio for Chapter 2 and should have it uploaded by the end of the day! Would it be ok if I completed the last 3 available chapters as well? (12, 13 & 14). I've really enjoyed going to the book and would love to contribute more.

Sure, you can have those three. Gosh, this one filled up fast!

And it is very nicely read! Just two little tweaks needed: there’s a bit too much silence at the beginning. Opening silences need to be between 0.5 and 1 second long, and yours is about 5 seconds. Please trim that back. Please also trim the silence between the intro and the start of the chapter. Two seconds there would be enough. Generally speaking, aside from the 5-second closing silence, most silences within readings should be about 2 seconds or less (and even less than that within paragraphs).

Please make those two corrections and re-upload your file for spot PL.

Thanks,
Winnifred

Morley is really good at funny, sad and profound all at once, isn't he?

A few changes for you:
  • At about 1:14, there’s a bit of a noise in the background. It’s not super-loud, but it’s a bit distracting.
  • At 6:26, I hear “she told Gissing, rather pathetically, that she intended to have the whole house repaired in the fall.” But the text reads “she told Gissing, rather pathetically, that she intended to have the whole house repapered in the fall.” It’s not a huge difference, but I think it would read better with “repapered.”
  • At 8:46, I hear “She quivered eagerly over her merchandise, her small paws flying.” But the text reads “She quivered eagerly over her machine, her small paws flying.”
  • At 12:20, I hear “It did strike him as odd, perhaps, that merchants did not dare to go in on a junket or plane or congenial dinner…” But the text reads “It did strike him as odd, perhaps, that merchants did not dare to go on a junket or plan a congenial dinner…”
  • At 14:31, I hear “These sagacious, humorous fellows who were amusing themselves with twaddling trade apothegms and ridiculous anodyne and ridiculous banqueteering solemnities, surely they were aware that this had no bearing upon their own jobs?” But the text reads “These sagacious, humorous fellows who were amusing themselves with twaddling trade apothegms and ridiculous banqueteering solemnities, surely they were aware that this had no bearing upon their own jobs?” Please snip out those extra words.
  • There’s an odd noise at 23:52.
Thanks,
Winnifred

It is fun, isn't it?

Chapter 5 is now PL OK.

Two small changes for Chapter 6:
  • At 6:15, I hear “An extremely beautiful sales-damsel, charmingly clad in black crepe de chyne, was supporting …” But the text reads “An extremely beautiful sales-damsel, charmingly clad in black crepe de chien, was supporting …” I wouldn’t normally comment on pronunciation, but part of the joke here is lost if this bold-faced word isn’t pronounced correctly. The fabric is “crepe de chine,” which would normally be pronounced “crayp de sheen” but in this case it’s spelled “crepe de chien” (chien is French for dog) and would be pronounced “crayp de shee-en.” Could you please correct that?
  • At 10:58, I hear “To his surprise he was ushered by the secretary into a charming Louis the XIV (14th) salon…” But the text reads “To his surprise he was ushered by the secretary into a charming Louis the XVI (16th) salon…” Now, I probably wouldn’t even have known the difference, but there may be listeners who do, so it's probably a good idea to fix this.
Let me know if you have any questions about how to edit.

Thanks,
Winnifred
