Short Science Fiction Collection 099, by Various
Science fiction is a genre encompassing imaginative works that take place in this world or that of the author’s creation where anything is possible. The only rules are those set forth by the author. The speculative nature of the genre inspires thought and plants seeds that have led to advances in science. The genre can spark an interest in the sciences and is cited as the impetus for the career choice of many scientists. It is a playing field to explore social perspectives, predictions of the future, and engage in adventures unbound into the richness of the human mind. (Summary by A. Gramour)
  • This collection is for science fiction stories of less than 74 minutes in duration that are in the Public Domain(with expired copyright, or published during or before 1928). Gutenberg plain text, us-ascii, uncompressed files of less than 80 KB or 10,500 story words can generally be read in less than 74 minutes (depending on your reading speed the word count estimate could be considerably higher or lower). If the story exceeds this length, it may be necessary to split the story into multiple parts.
Claiming stories is unnecessary (duplicates are held for future collections).

    Finding Texts:
This is a great thread to check if you are looking for sci-fi stories that have not been recorded for Librivox yet: viewtopic.php?p=2194408
Additional stories to record can be found scattered through this thread as well: List of Early Science Fiction
Project Gutenberg continues to add science fiction magazines such as The Galaxy and Astounding Stories. There you can view the fantastic covers and illustrations that accompany the stories.

    File Requirements:
    • Recording must be a mono MP3 file with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz and a bit rate of 128 Kbps.

    • File name must be formatted entirely in lower case letters and use under-bars to separate values as in:
ssf099_titleinoneword_authorlastname_readersinitials_128kb.mp3 (e.g. ssf099_nightfall_asimov_abc_128kb.mp3) Exclude definite articles like “The” from the file name.

Recordings require 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the file.
    Beginning Announcement:
“[story title] by [author]. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
You can then optionally say: "Recording by [your name]".
Then repeat: "[Title], by [author]. Translated by [translator]."

    Ending Announcement:
"End of [title], by [author] Translated by [translator]."
You can then optionally say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Recordings require 5 seconds of silence at the end of the file.

    Posting completed recordings:
    • Send your completed recording to us by using the LibriVox Uploader
    Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)

Good Evening:

When The Moon Fell
By Morrison Colladay
Read by Dale Grothmann
Time 63:24

Audio at: https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/ssf099_moonfell_colladay_dg_128kb.mp3
Text at: https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/72907/pg72907-images.html

I liked this one because he did his research. Most of this would be applicable to the same story written now.

Enjoy

Thanks! You're queued for PL! Btw, if you like the more grounded in science approach to sci-fi, a lot of the early stories from Hugo Gernsback's publications like Science & Invention, Radio News and Amazing Stories take a similar approach.

Betsy Curtis is not a new author. She is in the database Elizabeth M. Curtis and here pseudonym Betsy Curtis is there too. Not sure why this did not come up when you tried to put it in the metadata. :hmm: I will try again for you.

Ah, that's actually a known issue logged on the github site that searching by pseudonyms doesn't retrieve the author's name.

Here is a work-around suggestion for future, while the tech for a fix is investigated :

What I do is search the catalogue first, so if the pseudonym is in there it will show up in the search, and I'll know the main name with which to enter the author in the metadata.

When the Moon Fell
12:25 repeat "If we go into the interior"
Shorten ending silence to 5 seconds.
Thanks!

Hello again:

When the moon fell --

New time 63:15

Audio at --https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/ssf099_moonfell_colladay_dg_128kb.mp3

All else the same.

I agree. Hugo Gernsback was an exceptional editor, and I usually sift through his magazines as they become PD.

Thanks
Dale
