laurakgibbs wrote: May 8th, 2024, 2:51 pm And the reading sounds great; in that first long part (Section 5), I noticed just 2 little things:
11:49 for my flailing legs (not: flagging)
25:16 this interment which we make (not: intermittent)
I'm happy you're enjoying these.

Section 5 is ready for spot check: https://librivox.org/uploads/icequeen/weirdtalesjulesdegrandinvol1_05_quinn_128kb.mp3

Eeeeeek, long pigs! This is definitely not Captain Nemo making everything out of fish and seaweed! But the poor giant octopus got a bad rap here: he might eat a little shark, but he's not going to eat people.

Section 5 edits all good, and there are just a few little things here in 6 to check on:
3:02 little finny fellows (not: funny)
10:08 with a perfunctory bow (4 syllables: per-FUNC-to-ry)
26:18 Viscount Abingdon (viscount is a weird one, pronounced vie-count, https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/viscount)
28:39 a devil of a row (that's row-rhymes-with-cow, meaning a fight, like in "rowdy")
55:56 a passing Dutch steamer (not: streamer)

Hopefully I can start the next story tonight!

Ooooh, halfway through the final story........ and the title is still a mystery, ha ha. (But got my attention!)
I thought I would do the other half tonight but I'm just too sleepy, ha ha. So now I will probably end up having dreams about embalming or something: eeeeek!

Anyway, all good on the Section 6 edits, and there are just a couple of little things for Section 7:
6:42 a rosary of carved ebony (this phrase fell out)
9:43 the axillary (not: auxiliary... dictionary: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/axillary)

I'll be back to wrap it up this weekend, whoo-hoo!

Argh, I felt kind of cheated by that last one: the whole Brazil-detour was just misdirection... he should have just focused it on India from the start. I wonder what made him do the Brazil thing? And it was so creepy about the pig at the end, though I suppose maybe de Grandin got the idea from all the controversy about the greased bullets (tallow and/or lard; something to offend everyone!) that the Sepoys had to bite, just one of the many outrages the British committed against the Indians. Anyway, for sure "the curse of the nun" is still my favorite, ha ha. De Grandin should stick to European intrigue IMO, ha ha.

Anyway, just a few little things in this last section 8:
0:42 on the miscreants (it's a weird one: MIS-cre-ants)
5:40 too impalpable to be seen (not: impalatable)
11:53 his penetrating gaze (not permeating)
20:52 county prosecutor (not: country)
22:11 when he would fly (not: which)

I'll go check the edits on Section 7 now, and then it will be wrapping up yet ANOTHER fun project! Are you going to do more de Grandin? More Weird Tales? I loved seeing all the weird advertisements in the back of the magazine ha ha.

I felt disappointed about Brazil too, and liked the Curse of the Nun.

Thinking about Weird Tales Vol. 2. Are you BCing any projects now?

Whoo-hoo: 100% completed!!! Another job well done, and now I've gotten to know yet another famous-back-in-the-day literary character (de Grandin!) thanks to you.

I'm still trying to wrap up that Tales of 1927; one of the readers got sick but she really wants to do her stories (and she is such a good reader), so I'm waiting on her, and then I'll put up Tales of 1926. I have so much fun making those anthologies. It will be fun to do another one (and then when January 2025 comes, I'll get to do Tales of 1929!).

As always, I am so curious what you are going to do next!!!

  :D

Thanks for you help Laura! Thank you Ann!

I think I'll do a Vol 2 even though my French sucks. I'll send the link when I get it on the launch pad.

I planned to jump over to whatever project you have going and help out but it looks like you're almost done with it.

Oh, I will enjoy more de Grandin! And from what I can tell the author's French is not all that great because de Grandin's French is seriously ridiculous ha ha, so I wouldn't worry about it; that's why I haven't suggested any editing of the French. YOU are now the voice of de Grandin, and he should be glad that you are bringing him to new audiences (because you can tell he is an egomaniac ha ha ha, like Hercule Poirot too of course).

Those tales anthologies have worked out great with me NOT volunteering for any stories initially, and that way if someone does disappear, I can jump in and fill the gaps myself with pleasure. There's one person who I'm pretty sure is going to be a no-show this time, for example, but I'll just take her story if that's still the case after our missing person does come back (and she contacted me, so I know she will). I will definitely ping you when the new anthology is ready!!!

I took French in elementary for a few years but don't remember squat. When we lived in Sardinia we were able to pick up a French TV station in Corsica that was all porn but there weren't all that many words spoken.
I did help a French guy with directions when we lived in Spain but he didn't speak Spanish or English and that's the closest I've come to French since school. :D

Seemed like I always ended up recording a few extra sections when I was BCing too. I'd much rather record than BC, even though I don't edit very well. But I'm fortunate to have your help!

That's because you are such a good reader!!!

For me, I've discovered that I really like BCing these folktale anthologies! I prefer prooflistening to reading myself, and it's just so fun to introduce people to stories that are new to them and (hopefully) fun. Plus I know that there is just no way that all these beautiful books will ever get read for LibriVox, but if at least one or two stories from those books show up here, then that is at least something! :D
