The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as Narrated by Himself, by Josiah Henson (June 15, 1789 - May 5, 1883)

[This project is complete! All files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-life-of-josiah-henson-by-josiah-henson/
The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as Narrated by Himself is an autobiographical narrative given by Josiah Henson and written by Samuel Atkins Eliot. Henson's life story was the real-life inspiration for Harriet Beecher Stowe's best-selling novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. During his life, Josiah Henson was a slave in Maryland where he was the overseer of his owner's modest, 300-acre farm. Through various life experiences (such as transporting slaves from MD to Kentucky, then later visiting those slaves after they'd been sold into the Deep South, and how run down they were; his owner agreeing to let him buy his freedom, only to hike up the price way beyond his means, etc.), unlike Uncle Tom, Josiah escapes with his family into Canada. Later he returns to help more slaves via the Underground Railroad. (Summary by progressingamerica and TriciaG)

Ah! I suggested this project almost 10 years ago. Since then, PG has released the text. Very cool!

Feel free to crib any of my brilliant commentary for the blurb. :P

I'll set this up for you.

You planning to DPL?

May I have section 1, however you set it up. I'd be tempted to do this as a solo but I see you wish to make this a group project.

Great minds. :-)

No, I will be needing a DPL. I am a huge fan of cutting and pasting so I will definitely be borrowing from your original thoughts.

I generally prefer listening to solos - if you would like to have the work for solo I'm ok with that. TriciaG can probably make the necessary move if that is the best course?

I assume you want control of the MW... I've changed it to a solo in the back end and given you MW access.

I think you know enough of the drill by now that we don't have to change the first post to the solo template - unless you want to put in that effort.

I think I'll be okay. My inclination would be to create just three sections, but that will be up to progressing to decide.

I think three is fine, but I really wouldn't get to decide that anymore. I had initially considered making the segments fairly even for listening purposes, but I wanted to scan through the work more thoroughly and potentially divide it up into sections as best as could perhaps be logically done.

Potential sections I had in mind FWIW might be early life, life while working on the farm, during slave transports, during the escape north (perhaps part 1/2, depending on read time), and finally life in Canada are potentials I was thinking of. A soloist would be able to do the best job with editing these accordingly being closest to the work from front to back though.

It will read different than it sounds.

Good luck.

I will try to follow your conception of the project.

We might go to as many as 8 sections, but maybe I'm being premature in this. All is recorded and I will hopefully finish all the editing later today.

Do you need a DPL for this?

I can do if you would like.
