Afternoon all. Just found out about pickman's model and wondering if there was a source i could use for a future recording.
Cool Air was just added to gutenberg recently, so that's why it hasn't been recorded yet. You could always throw together a couple of them as a solo project and do a Weird Tales Double Feature if you want to do a solo project. I've done a bunch like that (https://librivox.org/search/?q=weird%20tales%20double%20feature&search_form=advanced). And yea, Horror at Red Hook is definitely incredibly xenophobic. It's worth reading though if for no other reason to give a basis to victor Lavalle's Ballad of Black Tom which is an excellent kind of revisionist take on it.Asproule1984 wrote: ↑March 23rd, 2024, 7:07 pm Thanks for this insight. surprised Cool Air hasn't been recorded yet. Would have some apprehension about recording the Horror at Red Hook. Heard it is arguably his most bigoted work. Any other lesser known eldritch adjacent works that have not been recorded yet?
Listened to The Ballad of Black Tom on audiobook and rather enjoyed it.flavo5000 wrote: ↑March 24th, 2024, 6:32 amCool Air was just added to gutenberg recently, so that's why it hasn't been recorded yet. Also just in the last couple days, Haunter in the Dark and Thing on the Doorstep have been added to gutenberg. Like Red Hook, those also fall into that "too short for a solo" bucket.
If you're looking for a solo project to do that's Lovecraft-related, I've read that The Comet Doom by Edmond Hamilton influenced Lovecraft (https://archive.org/details/Amazing_Stories_v02n10_1928-01_Missing_ibcbc_AK/page/n7/mode/1up). I've never read it, so I'm not sure in what capacity. Just going by what this page said: https://darkworldsquarterly.gwthomas.org/the-wellsian-invasions-of-edmond-hamilton/
But it's about 19,000 words which is a nice first solo project if you're curious about it.
There's also Robert E. Howard's "Black Canaan" which is supposed to be one of his better horror stories: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/71168
This one has a lot of racial slurs in it though which is I'm sure why it hasn't been recorded yet.
