Well, that was not the ending I expected... poor Gaspar, crushed under the cannon! And his wife ended up more sympathetic than I expected; I thought she was going to turn Gaspar into some kind of wicked assassin, but she just made him into a Royalist hero... with their daughter growing the heir of a Republican general. Go figure! I'm not sure why Conrad wanted to write about Chile; it just doesn't really seem right for him...? But I'm glad I got to know Gaspar thanks to your choice!!!

There were all kinds of mistakes in the Gutenberg text; I've never seen anything like it. You corrected a bunch of them as you read, but there were a couple others that I heard and I provided links to the Archive scan of the novel like last time.

Chapter 9
6:59 before the Moneta ("the" was missing)
11:56 on both sides this contest (an extra "of" snuck in there)
14:01 our arduous expedition (not ardorous)
14:52 of such antecedents (not: of such irascible... I'm not sure what happened there?)

Chapter 10
2:56 she was insatiable (it's a long a: in-say-shable https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/insatiable
4:21 first the whaling brig (not: the first whaling brig)
5:54 at the residence (a "first" snuck in there)
6:29 whenever she spoke (not: he spoke)
6:45 she was present reclining (not: presently)
7:48 suppressed vehemence (not: vemenence)
8:52 and attentions (not: intentions)
13:47 with Carreras (an extra "the" snuck in there)
14:04 remorselessly against use (not: remorsely)

Chapter 11
1:27 being speared (not: separated)
3:52 rest of incensed mankind (an extra "the" snuck in there)
4:23 the frontier fort of Pequena (not: the frontier of)
5:13 Then the great wooden gates (Not: When)
6:32 rode fearlessly (not: fiercelessly)
9:25 wringing his hands stealthily (not: steathily)
11:01 their toilful progress (not: toyful)
14:35 the shadows of the mountains (not: shadows mountains... error at Gutenberg; see top of p. 151
https://archive.org/details/youthgasparruiz0000conr/page/150/mode/1up
14:56 heard the voice of Jorge the artillerist (not: heard Jorge artillerist... error at Gutenberg again! so weird!)
15:23 in the spatter (not: splatter)
15:42 a suggestive and insensate dream (not: insate... it has 3 syllables: in-SEN-sate)
15:51 tones of awed alacrity (not: alicrity... https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/alacrity

Chapter 12
8:53 and her to whom you owe (not: and to her)

What a damn mess I made, not an editor for sure! See the slight change in Chapter 11 from 6:32 to 5:32.

Anyway, I think they're fixed and ready for spot checking.

WHOO-HOO: you did it! Perfectly seamless edits, and it's all good now: 100% all done and PL OK. Yay!!!

I think this book was under the curse of the typos: typos all over the Gutenberg text (??!?!), verbal typos when you read, and typos when I marked the timestamps. Maybe Erminia (mother, not daughter) really was a witch and put a curse on the whole thing, not liking the way she was portrayed and how Conrad made her jump off the cliff in the end!

But you did it... and now there is Gaspar Ruiz ready to go.

As always, I am up for whatever is next. The variety of things I've been able to read thanks to your choices is so much fun!

Erminia's mother must have been a witch! :D

Thank you both for your help with this project.
