Don Caesar de Bazan, by Adolphe D’Ennery (1811 - 1899) and Dumanoir (1806 - 1865), translated by Mark Lemon (1809 - 1870) and G.A. A'Beckett
This fast-paced, swashbuckling, romantic comedy is loosely based on characters from the 1838 play “Ruy Blas” by Victor Hugo. Dumnois and D’Ennery’s script foregoes both historical accuracy and adherence to the more gloomy tone of Hugo’s original. Instead, the dramatists choose to tell the story of Don Caesar, a dashing, charismatic officer in the service of King Charles II of Spain. Don Caesar is devoted to wine, women, and song. He is particularly smitten with the beautiful gypsy, Maritana. Despite the carefree and somewhat rakish impression he initially makes, Don Caesar’s scrupulous honesty, devotion to duty, and exceptional loyalty to his friends and comrades throws him into stark contrast with the perfidy and mendacious tactics employed by the more high ranking characters surrounding him. When scheming and dastardly behavior extends even to King Charles himself, how will Don Caesar escape with life and liberty intact?

Multiple operas were based this script including Massenet’s 1872 “Don Cesar de Bazan” and “Maritana” by William Wallace in 1845. Don Caesar was one of Edwin Booth’s signature roles and was popular with many other leading actors of the Victorian Era. Although the play has lost cultural currency with U.S. audiences, to this day, new versions of Don Caesar and Maritana’s adventures appear in movie theatres or on television screens in Europe every decade or two.

Seems I'm seeing a lot of projects being posted that are pre-cast before launching. In a recent discussion, this was addressed as NOT being the way to do a LV project, so I'm very confused by this trend

May I briefly wander onstage as The Officer?

MW has two "Officer ACT III" entries - one of them should be "Officer ACT I".

Thanks, Todd

Yes -- of course I would love to have you wandering about for as long as you wish - but do you mean the Captain of the Guard in Act I?

For the two roles marked "Officers Act III," I would like them to be part of a package deal. There are brief lines for a chorus of soldiers in Act I, two cavaliers in Act II, and one line for "officers" in Act III. As I have marked in the MW, I would like the same performers to take all these lines.

Ah, so there should be 3 MW section for Officers - Acts I, II, and III.

I accept your package deal for the Officers and will include Soldier chorus in Act 1 (in addition to actual Officer line at very end), Cavalier's something in Act 2 when I find it, and the Act 3 Officer lines.

Thanks, Todd
