Lavengro: The Scholar, The Gypsy, The Priest, by George Borrow (1803 - 1881)
TBA (Summary by Peter Dann)
Source text (please read only from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/30792

Target completion date: 2024-06-30

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

It appears that someone has previously started a Librivox project for Lavengro, but abandoned it.
If it's truly been abandoned, I wonder if there's some way of flagging it so it does not show up in a general public search against the name of author George Borrow (as it does now)?

Sunrise2020 has very kindly and courageously (given how little either of us knows about this long book!) agreed to act as DPL — a decision I hope she does not live to regret.

Hi Peter. It is showing in the catalog as On Hold because that is the status in the database. It was started in March 2013, and there are 24 sections recorded by RuthieG. Last post was 2016. We don't normally delete these from the database. It should probably be posted in the Abandoned Projects thread at this point. I'm guessing you aren't interested in using the existing recordings, correct?

In any case, the files are here

Thanks for that.

I’d like, if possible, to avoid a situation where my recording ends up being called “(version 2)” when/if, in fact, it’s the only available version for listeners. I’d best leave the handling of the seemingly abandoned version up to you, though.

And you’re right: I am not wanting to pick up the abandoned project.

I'll set this up for you and we can discuss the on-hold version when you finish. I think the on-hold shows up last though
Back soon.

(And just fyi , when I was handling off forum questions about things, there was about an equal number of queries as to whether version 2 meant that version 1 was horrible and we had to get someone to read it or it was a rating system. And neither is true :D )

Hope you have an airconditioned recording studio to spend a couple of days in :D
Please note that you will need 3-digit file numbers.

Thanks Anne. Alas, air conditioning and recording are not a good mix — but I can certainly cool the recording room down before I start, and will have to this next couple of days.
Good pickup about the three digit file numbers. I had missed that.

Version numbers get added as appropriate when projects are cataloged, not when they are started or in progress.

Hi Anne,
For projects where I've been the soloist (as I am here) I've usually been lucky enough to have the reader field prefilled with my own ID for each section in the magic window. That hasn't happened here. I've had a go at filling in this field myself, but have been able to succeed only with a single section. My other ten or so attempts to enter the reader in one section, or a sequence of sections, following the on-screen guidance have all been met with the spinning wheel of death. Are you able to help me with this?

On another point, is it OK if we're using double digit section numbers in the magic window (eg, '00') even though the uploaded filenames will need to use a triple digit (eg, '000') section number format?

Sorry - blame the hot weather :hmm: All done now.
The 2-3 digit bit is only important in the file names themselves - I think it is IA that sorts them so that you finish up with 01,02,03,04,05,06,07,08,09,10,101,102 ....,11,110...... (computers are dumb sometimes)

There’s a lot of stuff in your discussion which I don’t understand and will happily ignore. I’ve never been disappointed by Peter’s selections and I’m sure this one will be a fine discovery for both of us.

We are all aboard so off to going solo. I was PLing the on-hold version when real life struck the reader so it will be interesting to read both of your comments.
