Sowing Seeds in Danny, by Nellie Letitia McClung (1873 - 1951)
Nellie L. McClung (1873-1951) is a Canadian icon - a feminist, social activist, author, and political leader. When she was a child, she moved to Manitoba with her pioneering family of farmers. As a teacher in rural Manitoba, she was a keen observer of village life at the turn of the century, and her first novel "Sowing Seeds in Danny” (1908) was a poignant snapshot of daily life on the Canadian prairies and a national best-seller, which sold more than 100,000 copies.

As a suffragette, she led the campaign for women's enfranchisement, which saw Manitoba become the first province in Canada to grant the vote to women in 1916. By 1918, the same right was granted at the national level, before either the US (1920) or UK (1928). After moving to Alberta, she was elected to that province's legislature (1921-1926), where she championed children’s health care and women’s rights.

As a member of the "Famous Five" women, her statue now graces the the grounds of the Manitoba legislature, to commemorate the 1929 court challenge, which recognized women as “persons”, eligible to sit as federal Senators.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thank-you for the prompt attention. I will populate the MW with chapter titles later today.

A quick question. Is it easy to re-number the sections to begin with 00 (Prologue)? That way, the chapter numbers would align with the section numbers. If it's a hassle, don't worry about it.

Hi, Christine:

Please don't feel pressed to get to these in a hurry. I think I got ahead of myself, as some of these chapters were quite short. The prologue is actually a dramatis personae, which is unusual in a novel. But I thought I should include it, if only to untangle all the Watson children :)

Prologue: https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/sowingseedsindanny_00_mcclung_128kb.mp3 (2:42)
Chapter 1: https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/sowingseedsindanny_01_mcclung_128kb_mp3.mp3 (30:26)
Chapter 2: https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/sowingseedsindanny_02_mcclung_128kb_mp3.mp3 (9:31)
Chapter 3: https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/sowingseedsindanny_03_mcclung_128kb.mp3 (6:00)

The community of Milford really existed, though it was abandoned when it was bypassed by the railway in 1881. So Nellie McClung's use of it as a setting in 1903 is purely fictional! Though you can still see the grave of her mother in the cemetery, about 100 miles west of Winnipeg.

Thanks again.

Hi Atul, Very enjoyable listening! I already have opinions on the characters. :P Sections 0-3 are PL ok. Don't worry about the filename errors. I will fix those before I catalogue. Just note for future files not to have an extra .mp3 on the end. :D

Thanks, Christine: Sorry about the filenames; I was obviously clued out yesterday :)

I'm glad you're enjoying it. My wife's grandmother was a suffragette compatriot of Nellie McClung. On the weekend, we visited the Canadian Human Rights Museum here in Winnipeg, where we saw a display on the Famous Five, and I thought that Sowing Seeds in Danny might be a good introduction to her work. Her character portraits are just so intimate. After returning from the museum, I recorded a short-story for the 109th short-story collection, called Men and Money; I wept.

In any case, here's chapter 4:

PS: It took me until this morning to understand what she meant by an "oliver", which came up in the context of sponge baths with carbolic acid. She means an "all over" bath  .

Wow! Love it when projects come along that have personal meaning. I thought "oliver" meant olive oil!
