Philosophy, by Bertrand Russell (1872 - 1970)

Volunteers outside the USA: Bertrand Russell died in 1970. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 70 years for authors who died after 1971; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
Bertrand Russell was a well known mathematician, philosopher, and author. First published in England under the title "An Outline of Philosophy," this work by Russell was controversial in its day for its assertion that humanity is worthy of consideration only as an instrument by which we acquire knowledge of the universe. His personal philosophy was one which he described as "logical atomism." Despite the weightiness of the topic, Russell's style is, as always, engaging and accessible. (Summary by Ciufi Galeazzi)

If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

And we're off! And if this doesn't make your brain hurt a tiny bit, I don't know what will.

Oh, goodness. And now I remember why I detested my required Philosophy class. "What is this finaglery? 'Ain't Nobody Got Time For That.'"

Maybe Russell will help my grasp its concepts a little better, like the Space/Time "thing" :)

Chapter 1 is PL OK

Right? Mare was listening to me edit and grumbled, "It might not be a chair, but he'd sit on it anyway."
I read a lot of philosophy when I was younger. Now - well, you know that song,"Closer to Fine" by the Indigo Girls? That's pretty much old lady me. But I like the way Russell puts his thoughts across, and it is kind of fun to think about.

Chapter 2 is up. I did find it pretty engaging - although some of his premises, particularly about language, may be outdated.

Yeah, I hear you on the outdated factor, but I did enjoy this chapter more - was right with him the whole time on the first pass. (remembering listening 2 and sometimes 3 times for the space-time concepts)

Chapter 3 is up. I remember learning about the experiments with the little boy and the rat in Ed. Psych. classes. Little Albert. Geez.

Ch. 3 is PL OK

But, egads! That statement about the State performing experiments on the children of prisoners . . .

I thought he was, but it was still horrid, knowing he wrote that just before all the Nazi, Russian, and Japanese experimentation on their various prisoners, and then also the whole Tuskegee thing here. And not being fully confident that certain elements in our current politics wouldn't fully embrace the concept today. :(
