Essays In Popular Science, by Julian S. Huxley (1887 - 1975)

Volunteers outside the USA: Julian S. Huxley died in 1975. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 70 years for authors who died after 1971; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
A collection of biological essays written by Julian S Huxley, a professor of zoology at the now called King's college London University published in 1926. Since our understanding of biology and science as a whole is ever evolving with each new discovery, some (but not all) of the essays in this collection may have become dated as a result. Nevertheless they still make for a fascinating read/listen from both a scientific and historical perspective. Essay topics are- Heredity, inheritance of characteristics, determination of sex, infant mortality links to sex, the dominant sex, biology in utopia, the control of the life-cycle, the meaning of death, 'elixir vitae', birth control, Thomas Henry Huxley and religion, the history of science, birds and the territorial system, psychology, evolution and purpose, the frog, tadpoles and developmental physiology. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hello, and welcome to LibriVox!

I'm glad you're ready to get started, but I want to be sure you get off to a good start. Most folks who begin with a solo reading out of the gate, don't wind up finishing. We find it's best if you do a couple of chapters in group projects first - you'll get a good idea of how much work goes into each, and you'll also get to know our system before you have to drive it!

We strongly suggest: make a "1-minute test" recording first. It's not an audition, just a way to make sure things are set up right. We'd hate to have you record an entire chapter, only to find that we couldn't use the recording!

Then, I'd highly recommend signing up for a section or two in a group project - I started with Short Works, and then did some chapters in full books when I felt ready.

I'm moving this thread over to "On Hold" for now, but when you feel you are ready (definitely after doing that 1-minute test!), just post back in the thread, and it will be moved back to the Launch Pad. Then, someone will join as your MC, and get you the next steps for your solo reading! :D
