Multilingual First Chapter Collection 012, by Various
The first chapter of a book is often the hook to draw a reader in. It could make you eager for more or realize it isn't for you.
How to contribute: This is an open collection where you can offer the first chapter of a book of your choice, which means you don't have to pre-claim a section. Just follow the instructions below to record and submit your file. Previous First Chapter Collections can be found in the catalogue here. Duplicate versions of first chapters are fine, though not in the same volume.

Source text: Please choose books that are in the public domain. This generally means works published in 1928 and earlier. If unsure about a book, feel free to ask in this thread. When looking for public domain books, Project Gutenberg is a good place to start. Any language is welcome. If recording in a language other than English, you may also say the opening and closing words in that language too (intro and outro). Some translations of the intro are available here.

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here.

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Title: The Pauper, The Thief, and the Convict
Published: 1865

Author: Thomas Archer (1830-1893, according to Gutenberg entry)

No Wikipedia entry for the author

To read along: https://www.victorianlondon.org/publications3/pauper.htm

... but I read from a copy that I downloaded from somewhere that I've forgotten. It looks like Archive pdf format, but they hadn't a copy when I looked just now. (EDIT: I've checked my recording against the victorian London text.)

Thanks, Rapunzelina; I must have taken the time from the sound file before I increased the tempo.

I asked my librarian about the noise, and she said, "no one would come here
if they weren't allowed to talk out loud." So I read out loud.

And here's the first chapter of "The Book of the Cheese". First Edition compiled by Thomas Wilson Reid ("T.W. Reid" on the fly leaf).

Thanks, Rapunzelina; yes, I wonder how many people will be attracted by the flavour of the title!

How precise is the phrase "First chapter"? I soloed a book a little while ago which was a semi-fictional account of life in a Sussex village. Each month had three short pieces, and there was a seven-paragraph introduction to the whole book. I'd like to read the intro and the first section in January as a "First Chapter". Would that be okay?

90-95% precise  I think it's alright to have 1 in 10 or so sections diverge from the standard. Most welcome!
