It's hard for me to accept that the Victorians used the rifle as their research tool for naturalising and he doesn't seem to have been bothered that he was torturing these beautiful primates with either his poor marksmanship or small gauge rifle. Am I naive to think that our values have changed a bit? Well, maybe yes.... for some.

Is it being political to discuss values and ethics around guns? To some, surely. Naturalists don't research primates or warm blooded animals with lethal guns anymore (I think) but certainly many other sorts of creatures are researched by killing them. I'm thinking of a recent deep sea research trip that brought back hundreds of previously unknown to science marine animals from deep waters east of NZ..... having to have killed them in the process. And then for most gun users -- how well are values around humane use of their weapons and doing no harm embedded in that group? Tomorrow is the 5th anniversary of the gunman's attack on our lovely peaceful Muslim community while they were at prayer .....

Anyway, no guns in Chapter 5. Plenty of bamboo and (spoiler alert) some bridges that make New Zealand's back-country three-wire bridges seem like a dawdle (did you ever get to experience one of those?)
