To avoid this deplorable misnomer was easy; the spelling of the word had only to be altered, and by common consent both pronounced and written “Budhism,” instead of “Buddhism.

Is there a difference in pronunciation between "budhism" and "buddhism"? This line of text from the Introduction seems to suggest there is although I am at a loss to find it. Any suggestions or should I just pronounce the two words the same?

Maybe pronounce "budhism" like "bud" and "hism" and then pronounce "buddhism' the usual way?

Let's let Czandra, the BC, decide this though.

Right. Your suggestion makes sense, though, based on the pronunciation of other Sanskrit words.

I think all of us would be guessing on this somewhat. However, your quote indicates that maybe it was just the spelling that had to be changed, so pronunciation same? The French is 'Boudhisme', which indicates an accepted dipthong in the 'u'. You could accentuate that when reading the version with one 'd'. Up to you now, Tim. Thanks for asking

I asked my librarian about the noise, and she said, "no one would come here
if they weren't allowed to talk out loud." So I read out loud.

Hi guys,

Another question: when the number of a footnote appears in the text, eg "...we did our best to correct the mistake.1 To avoid this deplorable misnomer..." should I read "footnote 1" or just pass over the number?

Please pass over the number. We're not reading footnotes in this text, as it's full of details already. Do read text in square brackets though. Thanks
