What a horrible stopping place. I hate cliffhangers.
Got to wonder what he sees. Anyway, it is another PL OK.
Sad that the ice rink didn't open. We had no water near us so they filled a few park areas with water so there would be places to skate. I think I would be happy with a balmy winter if I lived in Winnipeg.

I don't like suspense, and cliff hangers are particularly insidious, since the delay until the next instalment can be too long to bear .
But much is clarified in the next chapter, which was fortunately shorter than the others (though it also ends on a cliff hanger!):

Crofts is a master of cliff-hangers! I'm surprised he isn't better known. My wife is an avid reader of the mystery genre, particularly stories with less gory crimes, like this. And she had never heard of him.

And I never heard of him either, until I listened to my first Inspector French case here at LibriVox. I like your wife already. I am a mystery fan too, also of the less gory variety.
With Chapters 7 and 8, there are two more PL OK's for this suspenseful story.

I mostly read non-fiction (e.g. history and science), but I thought I'd try a mystery for a change. It certainly is suspenseful!

Thanks for the feedback on the character voices, as I find listening to my feeble attempts a bit "cringe-y". I know I'm no voice actor, but it's fun to try.
In the next chapter, I can't believe that Cheyne is about to fall for yet another yarn from these criminals! He's certainly gullible . Interestingly, Inspector French doesn't make an appearance until Chapter 13.

You'd have thought Cheyne would have learned his lesson by now. Definitely gullible. Can't wait to listen tomorrow.
And you have some fun voices. My biggest fear with voices is that I am going to forget how to sound for a particular character. In one short fairy tale I ended up reading each character's lines all together and then had the fun of trying to insert everything in order.
Chapter 10 with yet another cliffhanger is another PL OK.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of recording each character separately, though I don't relish the editing job in assembling them (and it's a short novel!). Please let me know if my voices are getting confused. I try to distinguish them, but I know that Blessington and Dangle differ only slightly in pitch.

please correct the start - you have "chapter 10 of ..."where it should be "chapter 11..."
since you have to edit the file anyway, would you mind deleting slightly under 0.5 seconds at the start, the silence is a little too long.
How goes the saying: fool me once shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. What if it is more than twice? Cheyne needs a little more common sense.
Other than the wrong chapter number at the start, it is all good.

I am surprised that we haven't met French yet.

Sorry about that. It's been corrected and marked as "ready for spot PL", since nothing else changed.

French is the real deal in terms of sleuthing e.g. matching footprints and slogging over maps rather than purely deductive flights of fancy. It's nice to see. Although Celia managed to track down a couple of radio dramas, I'm sort of surprised that he never caught on as a character in radio or TV.
