silverquill wrote: January 22nd, 2024, 6:58 pm Sure! I thinks four sections sounds about right. You can put them in the MW just as Part I, Part II, etc.

I also see that there are a LOT of tables in this short book - nine by my count - and the do all have to be read. There are a couple of ways you can read these. Keep in mind that the listener needs to understand the narration without the benefit of seeing anything or really being able to visualize the way the table is set up. So, there will of necessity be redundancy in reading them so that they are comprehensible to the listener.

The first option, which I personally prefer, is to read them across. This would be read this way:

Using Table A as an example

Years 1801 to 1810 Average number of pounds of Tea consumed per annum 23,717,882
Average annual Population 16,794,000 Average number of pounds of Tea consumed per head per annum 1·41

Years 1811 to 1820 Average number of pounds of Tea consumed per annum 24,753,808
Average annual Population 19,316,700 Average number of pounds of Tea consumed per head per annum 1·28

and so on down the table

For Tables B and C, since there are only columns, it could be read as:

Average number of pounds of Tea consumed per head per annum
New South Wales 8·01 Victoria 7·38 etc.

For Table D can also be simplified since there is only one heading, like:

1866-70 India 6.2 Ceylon zero China 91·44 Other Countries 1.94 etc. down the column

Table E is more complicated, but let's give it a go.
After reading the description of the table:

Description and District: Orange Pekoe, Deamoolie, Assam: Wholesale Price without duty per lb. 1 shilling ten pence: Per cent. Extract 24·75: Per cent. Alkaloid 3.11 Per cent. Tannin 6.87 Proportion of tannin corresponding to 2·8 per cent. Alkaloid. 6.18

Going down the table line by line. You may know, but d is an old abbreviation for pence. an a slash / denotes shilling and may be followed by another number which is pence. In line 4, I have no idea what ss u means. Omit it if you cannot decipher it.

The remainder of the tables can be read in like fashion.

If this is more information than you need, just ignore my prattling.
It helps me now and then to review this for my own sake. I do some other projects that frequently have tables and charts like these.
Hi silverquill,

I got the first part done then reread your post. I said Section 1 instead of part 1. That may be better. I can redo that. Here it is -

I did mange to see this, but you do need to put this in the Magic Window and mark it Ready for PL, and put the file length in the Notes field.

I can still download this, but I've lost several weeks of LV time, so I'm a bit backed up.
I'll listen as soon as I can and give you a report.

I hope things are well. Oooooh. I saw the 'MC to select' on page 1 and defaulted to reader only mode. It's completed. You gave me some good tips for tables and that will keep me busy for a few weeks.

Excellent reading, Ellen!
Jus a small technical issue to take care of. At the beginning we need a silent period of just 0.5 - 1.0 seconds, and you have a little over 2 seconds. Trim it be one, and you'll be golden. Upload the corrected file under the same name and then post the link and new file length here again, and I'll give it a quick check.

Looking forward to hearing the rest of the book!

Done.

The next part has tables. I may have included too many in Part 2 and may be adding parts. Some things came up and it may be a week or so when i get to it.

Hi silverquill,

I made corrections on Part 1 and uploaded Part 2. My guess is when corrections are made the file is marked 'ready for spot PL.'

What do you think about the length of these parts so far? I am trying to determine how to split up the rest of the book. Are these standard lengths or is it okay to make a Part 20 - 30 minutes?

Yes, Ready for Spot PL, and I've checked it and marked it PL OK

Again, excellent reading, and good job with the tables. Actually, you could have shortened the two tables that have only only one column. You just read the title of the table, the column heading, then go down the list. No need to change it though, unless you want to. It is still fine as it is.

One correction to make on a date: at 1:02 Text “1700” I hear “seventeen thousand”
While you're at it, could you add about three seconds of silence at the end so that it is closer to five?

Good work!

Good reading, Ellen!

I did find this in my Management Dashboard, but it is also good practice to post a note here just for clarity of communication whenever you post something. So, I surmise that you made the requested correction, and it is seamless, so now PL OK for section 2. Sections 3 is a new posting, and I do have one note for you.

At about 1:22 the name of the celebrated and prolific poet, William Cowper, is actually pronounced Cooper. Don't ask me why. I said this wrong for a long time before someone corrected me, and have it wrong in at least one of my recordings. Since it is a pronunciation issue, normally outside of standard PL, I have marked this PL OK, and leave it up to you to decided on correction. Let me know one way or the other.

Got it on the posting. I camped out on learning about the magic window after I posted it and never sent a note. Here is the next part - https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/teaandtheeffectsofteadrinking_04_tebb_128kb.mp3 13:10. Section 2 corrections got made. Cowper got changed to Cooper. My editing skills are improving. What do you think of the speed? I'm trying to make it listenable but not too slow. Are the breaks between paragraphs ok? I can see where listening fatigue can set in when thoughts aren't separated (and this is boring material.) I'm pretty sure the word caffeine wasn't used much when this book was written. So many paragraphs about its effects and the word not used once yet.

Sorry to be so late in my PL. Just a lot going on and now am at my brother's house in Oregon, long trip for a short stay, but we got a day in Yosemite which is nice.

Anyway, I think you are doing an excellent job with your narration! I listen to a LOT of recordings on LibriVox, and you are up there with the best. So, whatever you are doing, keep doing it. Editing does get easier with experience, so be encouraged.

Everything to date is PL OK :)

Here are the last 2 parts - https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/teaandtheeffectsofteadrinking_05_tebb_128kb.mp3 29:35 and https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/teaandtheeffectsofteadrinking_06_tebb_128kb.mp3 7:54.

What a treat - Yosemite. That had to be worth the travel.

Glad the recordings are good. I made some adjustments along the way and wasn't sure whether it was overkill. Does Librivox assign books to get on various social media platforms? I asked TriciaG about that but didn't get a reply.
