The Hole in the Wall, by Arthur Morrison (1863 - 1945)
A lively story about a pub, and those who ran it, at the end of the 19th century in the East End Dockland of London, with its poverty-stricken working people and criminal underworld. (Summary by Anthony Ogus)
Source text (please read only from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/34538

Target completion date: 2024-06-17

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

MW is in placed and ready to be filled out by you. Then we can move to going solo.

I could volunteer to DPL if you have no one else lined up yet. It sounds like a fascinating story.

Also: as soloist you can preclaim your cover if you wish to do your own CD cover, but I guess you know that already.

Hello Kitty & Sonia

Delighted to have you both to have you on board as, respectively, MW and DPL.

Hopefully, first chapter to be posted in a week or so.

wow it's a great start already. Despite the sad occasion, it was very funny to your doing the aunts' voices in their dialogue. What a bunch of unsavoury ladies. :? The boy is better off with his grandfather.

It promises a very good book. Looking forward to more. Also your narration is very easy to follow along, so thanks !

Textually all is perfect, but there are a few cosmetic things to edit still:

> the background noise is a bit disturbing and would profit from one round of noise-cleaning
> the volume is a bit low, maybe amplify with +1 at least
> the filename is wrong, see the correct naming standard in the first post, here: holeinthewall_01_morrison_128kb

Also, you forgot to update the MW with the chapter titles. I started you off by writing the first one in section 1 slot. Could you please fill out the rest ? We need titles before we can catalogue.

thanks

I think it is already better this way. The background noise is still audible sometimes in the quiet parts, but it's not that disturbing. Are you using audacity ? How did you do the noisecleaning if I may ask ?

But I think we can mark it PL ok.

Have a nice weekend :)

Many thanks. Yes, I record with Audacity and for noise-cleaning used the facility "Noise reduction" on the Effects menu. Any other suggestions?

Nb will be away for a long weekend in France, Belgium and German, so don't know when next chapter will be posted.

yes I meant what "numbers" are you using in the noisecleaning program ? It may make a difference.

Hope you are enjoying your holiday trip. Ours went well, but had other commitments on our return, hence the delay in recording Chapter 2 - now posted.

 did they just kill Marr by the end of the chapter ? Whatever for ? Unwholesome fellows... but an intriguing chapter and probably not easy to narrate with all the low-class dialect. Absolutely PL ok, thanks.

And yes, my trip was pleasant and we saw many interesting sights :) Hope yours was agreeable as well.

Thanks.

I've been to Luxembourg a few times, but do not know it well. Have you been there long? I had assumed that you were American since all my previous MCs have been from the US.

Our trip was primarily for opera (I am an opera fanatic) and the first stages in Tourcoing and Brussels were very good, but then Deutsche Bahn let us down badly and we arrived at our their destination (Schwetzingen) two hours late and the performance there was disastrously bad!

Chapter 3 posted.

Best wishes
