The Life of Florence Nightingale, by Sarah Tooley (1856 - 1946)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/life-of-florence-nightingale-by-sarah-tooley/
Journalist and author Sarah Tooley was best known in her time for her biography of Queen Victoria and this biography of Florence Nightingale, written while its subject was still living (while Project Gutenberg lists its publication date as 1916, its original publication date appears to be 1904). Tooley gives us a comprehensive and engaging look at the life of this remarkable woman, who was not only the founder of modern nursing, but a statistician, social reformer, feminist, and author. (Summary by Ciufi Galeazzi)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This copy is dated 1904. I also found a 5th ed. dated 1908. If they are calling them different editions there might be differences between them.

Section 1 is PL OK

I felt like I should know who Sir Richard was, but I haven't the faintest idea. I suppose that reinforces the point of her name being so universally and enduringly recognized. 8-)

Yes, and I had to look up Lea Hall. It's been available for short rentals since 2019! If I had 10K sitting around, I'd rent a week there for a fun gathering of anyone who wanted to join in! (there's even a 30% sale right now) . . . Let's go!

If you click on one of the two photos on that page, it opens the image scroll where you can click through a lot more photos.

I think we were each PL'ing the other's recording at the same time.

Chapter 3 is PL OK

And, "Oh, my!" Lea Hurst, and it has B&B suites . . . Florence Nightingale Suites

I've been drooling at this the past 20 minutes. Alas, there are no openings in August for our 35th anniversary. :sigh: Which is actually OK, because I'm not sure where my brain thought we would come up with the funds to just pop over to England at that time.

It's fun to dream about, though... :D
CH. 4 is ready for a listen. I am continuing to find this book a pleasant read., You know, I do think that this era of writers (turn of the 20th century) tends to portray childhood in a kind of cloying and simpering way, but then again, most current movies and streamers tend to present children and adolescents as sullen, foul mouthed little creeps - equally untrue and much more annoying to this old retired middle school teacher. Most of my students were quite likeable, I thought.

Yes, there are a lot of really nice young people. I thought the whole dog passage was really sweet. Lucky dog to have had a champion!
