The World that Never Was, by Arthur St. John Adcock (1864 - 1930)
Olive, age seven and a half, and her brother Tony, who is one year younger, live in London. Because their mother has been sent away ill, they are being raised by their beautiful but unpleasant Aunt Prue, their dad, who is a businessman too busy to see them, and their loving but homely nurse Becky. One night, a mysterious appearance by their mother leads them to a great adventure. Even though Becky has warned them not to, they decide to go out at night to see what the city is like when everyone else is home sleeping. At the stroke of midnight, magical things happen. Published in 1908. (Summary by Verla Viera)

Although this looks like an interesting possibility for either proof listening or reading, I can't access the text. Is there another source? I've checked PG and IA, and there isn't one there.

Thanks,
Winnifred

Readers Wanted:
Where the Blue Begins by Christopher Morley (humorous novel about a "Synthetic Hound" named Haphazard Gissing I.)
Potemkin Village by Fletcher Pratt (science fiction novelet)

Thanks,
I know. I also checked PG, IA, and hathitrust because I know Google Books is problematic for some. I assume it would be permissible to email you the pdf. I'll be happy to do that. You can PM me your email address if you're interested .

Ok, I'll do that. I'd like to take a look first, then decide, if that's ok with you.

Thanks,
Winnifred

Ok, that does look like a charming story. I'll bite. Can I volunteer to DPL?

Thanks,
Winnifred

All filled in. FYI, the area that starts "This paragraph is temporary..." is still in the first post. Thanks for the MC!

Yes, its ok that it remains. I generally delete that when I catalogue. I can remove it now though. Off to Readers Wanted!

Thanks for the move. I haven't done a YA book before, so I'll be interested to see how it goes. I think people tend to like the shorter chapters, but I don't know if YA is popular with readers.

As to the temporary paragraph, I just think with removing it, it's that much less for readers to look through when they're looking at the first post. Especially newbies, who sometimes have enough trouble absorbing all the information as it is.

Yes that is an excellent point. I think I will go through and delete them all. I love how we all help each other.

When you first posted this with the google books link I contacted google to ask them to make it available to us here in Canada because it was in the public domain.

They responded immediately to say they would review its status. I just got an email saying the review was approved and it is now available for full access.

I realize it isn't necessary now that it is on archive.org but just thought you might like to know. :)

Lucky you. The last time I asked Google for access to something I knew was in the public domain in Canada, they turned me down, and said it wasn’t. I think they sometimes have some difficulty with the authors who died after 1971 bit.
