Hi Repunzelina,

This Hardy poem was written to mark the centenary of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It was first published in the Times newspaper in 1924, and then seemingly circulated as a limited edition printing, so it doesn't appear in Hardy's collected works. I thought it would be appropriate to record it for the bi-centenary of the RSPCA.

Compassion by Thomas Hardy (1840-1928)

This recording is a spin-off from Laura Gibbs' Tales of 1928 project for which I read a different (prose) version of the same story.
