This project is complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog pagehttps://librivox.org/the-nibelungenlied-by-anonymous-2/

The Nibelungenlied translated by George Henry Needler (1866 - 1962)

Volunteers outside the USA: George Henry Needler died in 1962. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 70 years for authors who died after 1971; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
The only translation into Rhymed English Verse in the Metre of the Original of the epic German poem The Nibelungenlied. There was a 2013 Librivox recording of the Shumway prose translation, but none for the verse. (Summary by Kurt Papke)
Source text (please read only from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/7321

Target completion date:

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hey Christine, pleasure to work with you. Thanks for helping me with my first solo! I have updated the MW with the section titles and ownership. I didn't see any instructions on how to edit the project page so I naively assumed I could just go ahead and edit it so I made a few changes. Removed the "Various" author as it doesn't add anything and aligns with the Shumway translation reading. Also change the file name template to drop Various and add Needler as that will be specific. Let me know if all that is OK.

I am ready to move to the Going Solo subforum if you are!

The short preface is ready for PL:

https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/nibelungenlied_00_needler_128kb.mp3 01:40

I wrestled with including all the historical background mentioned in the preface. It's ~25 pages or so. The Shumway translation did not, and I elected to skip it. If you think this is worthwhile recording it, I can certainly add it to the MW.

I have a couple more sections close to being ready, and I'll upload them in clumps as we go along, but I wanted to get the kinks out of the process in this first iteration before doing any more uploads.

If it is in the book then it is my opinion that you should include it. I, for one, would be interested in knowing the historical background. Let me know what you decide. I will hold off PL until I hear from you.

I will need to break up the Introduction into bite-sized pieces which will take me some time, and doing so won't impact the preface, so if you wouldn't mind please go ahead and PL the uploaded file. I appreciate your perspective, there's a lot of good stuff in the intro. The uninterested listener can simply skip over it.

TIA!

Thanks for the feedback! I have section 2 ready to go:

https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/nibelungenlied_02_needler_128kb.mp3

I am leaving out footnotes, and omitted sub-section 8 which is really just a footnote concerning the manuscripts. Let me know if you disagree.

I struggled a bit with some of the German in sub-section 7...

I am starting to record the first few Adventures. They require a bit of poetic license regarding pronunciation to make the rhymes work. I am having to choose which of the two, first or second, endings to butcher. As you PL these let me know if you see/hear a different interpretation.

First two Adventures ready for PL. Nice to start actually reading the poem!!

https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/nibelungenlied_03_needler_128kb.mp3 7:03
https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/nibelungenlied_04_needler_128kb.mp3 8:24

Just FYI, we have guests coming to stay with us for the next 3 weeks, so I will fit in a section or two as time permits - the short sections are helping me out here! Feel free to let them pile up until it is worth your while to PL.

TIA.
