Imperialism and World Politics, Part 1 of 4, by Parker Thomas Moon (1892 - 1936)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found in our catalog:
https://librivox.org/imperialism-and-world-politics-part-1-of-4-by-parker-thomas-moon/

Moon’s Iᴍᴘᴇʀɪᴀʟɪsᴍ ᴀɴᴅ Wᴏʀʟᴅ Pᴏʟɪᴛɪᴄs is perhaps the best-known work of the Columbia University professor and political scientist; It was published in 1926 and did not go out-of-print until after 1940. “What convenient volume,” he asks, exists as a “general account of the greater imperialism of our own times?” A question which was suitably answered by the publication of this sweeping survey of the field.

Written in what would prove to be the gathering twilight of European imperialism, and with the inclination towards reflection that only the aftermath of a great catastrophe like the First World War can evoke, this work spans the globe and follows behind Great Britain, France, Belgium, Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan and the United States as they shaped world politics to their own ends—imposing their will on states, economies and peoples.

Moon writes of his work that, “It can make no claim to finality.” Indeed, this is surely not the last word on the subject. Not in the past. Not even, truly, in the present. And yet, Moon’s work does possess a greater degree of finality than he at the time, perhaps, might have credited.

THIS IS PART ONE OF FOUR.

In this part, Moon casts a bright light upon the driving forces, the economics and the vested interests. He unpicks the propaganda, the rationalizations, and the theories.

He also follows the Belgians into the Congo, and casts an eye over West Africa where—over the course of five decades—the region has been transformed by Great Britain, France and Germany.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

And I'll be glad to join as your MC! Back with your Magic Window shortly. :D

Update: Your Magic Window is in place. I'm assuming you wanted 19 sections rather than 9, so you have a total of 20 including the Preface. I see later chapters with as many as 58 pages, but you'll be able to add more sections if needed.

If you have any questions, just say so. I'll be around!
I'll be out for a bit on this last weekend of April, but still checking in as I get the chance. I will try to follow up on Monday, with anything I can't do on the go.

Well here is the division I've got planned;

https://i.imgur.com/hKy0tJf.png

Effectively the book as a whole has 20 chapters / 570 pages being broken up into 38 sections. I've split the book into 4 separate projects of broadly equal length and kind of cohesive regional grouping. "Never eat anything bigger than your own head," is pretty solid life advice, after all.

I can break it this part into further sections just fine though as the breaks I've made have only been to keep section length down; there are plenty of additional cleavage points available and from the standpoint of navigation it would make things easier for the reader.

And here is the cover, if you are interested;

Well, alright! I saw 19 chapters, and 9 sections requested, and figured it might be a typo. But you know what you're doing.

I've cleared most of the extras, and I'll let you fill them in as you wish before I take out the last one (either section 9 or section 0, depending whether you want a section 0).
Just let me know which to remove, when ready. :D

I see the MW has been filled out, so I've removed that extraneous section #9. Moving us along to Going Solo!

Greeting :)

Here is Section 1. Its length is 19:01. It makes a few interesting economic predictions, especially for 1921.

great reading. A couple of notes:

2@04:23 missing bit underlined
titanic conflict of 1914. Austria-Hungary, as lesser partner in the Central European coalition, strove to master the Balkans. Russian tsars

5@13:35
but their shares rose to 40% in 1913
but their share rose to 40% in 1913

P.S.
I am VERY apologetic for this delay in prooflistening duties! I missed the upload and post informing me of the file ready for PL.
I guess now I owe you a drink...

Just chiming in here to make sure we're on the same page when it comes to "Standard" PL. If the BC wants exacting notes, they'll change the PL level to "Word Perfect" instead.

The first one is a good catch, and ought to be fixed. You're not required to read along while listening, but when we find a whole sentence is missing, we add it.

The second is the kind of minor error that you might mention as an optional note, leaving it up to the reader whether they want to fix it. Same with the earlier note on "productive of the war in 1914". I wouldn't usually mention either of these for "Standard" PL unless they significantly change the meaning, or are confusing.

For something a tad bigger ("biographical" vs "bibliographical"), the BC decides whether this would be too confusing and ought to be fixed. Since the reader is also the BC in this case, I'd certainly mention it, but it should be understood that it's up to their judgement.

Thank you for taking the time to PL! :D

Thank you redrun for the clarification. Please note that I don't write notes for any discrepancy with the text. Both examples above of minor error are instances of when I stop the recording and debate with myself if it matters; those two seemed worth mentioning in the context - eg. if we are speaking of money and economics, "shares" can be confusing in my opinion; or, "war" and a specific war are two different concepts.

Having said that, I accompanied in the past my notes for Alister with something along the lines of "let me know which errors are not important for you". I now trust that Alister will let me know about the yes/no fixing, even if I don't mention my flexibility about it any longer.
