Hello!

This is my first recording, so I hope it's all okay - let me know if there are any problems!

I’m sorry but I cannot accept this. It clearly states copyright 2001… we need 1928 or earlier (our servers are in the US, and this is US law, which, unlike the UK and many other countries, is not based on the author’s death date).
However if we can find this story published earlier, it might be ok but I’d have to check carefully there were no changes.

Edit: good news! It was published in a collection that is acceptable. https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1429
I will need to check carefully there are no discrepancies... sometimes newer editions are reprints, and sometimes they are edited.

Life of Ma Parker

There were no material differences between your reading and the text, with one exception:

~0:38 please add "she said quietly" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Y5hYq78ohs&t=16s (you don't have wrong words to replace, but this will show you how to insert missing text)

The volume of the file is too low. Please increase it by about 5 dB https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_z607awyLw

Please make these edits and reupload with the same filename.

I loved the way you made it clear who was speaking, and how Ma Parker was lost in her thoughts.

Hi Lynnet!

I'm sorry for the confusion - I think I must have linked you to the wrong e-text as there were a few floating about on my desktop.

I've added the missing line, and I *think* I've sorted the volume? I think there was something wrong with the initial audio file, so I've re-done it, and hope it's better... Checker says it's okay, but, as I say, I'm quite new to this!

Thanks, Lynnet. McClung does such a lovely job capturing daily life on the Canadian Prairies; she deserves to be more widely known, even today :)

She as already in our catalog, so at least one recording of her work… but I admit I’d never heard of her 8-)

Thank you.
When you say “I’ve redone it” do you mean you re-recorded the whole thing, or just fiddled with the previous file?
FYI, we ask readers to not re-record unless specifically asked, as it creates a lot more work.

Oh- yes, I had to re-record the whole thing as the volume wouldn’t increase properly on the original file! Sorry, I didn’t realise! Will bear in mind.

That probably meant you had peaks. You can use the Compressor Effect in Audacity, which evens out the volume. You can apply it up to 3 times before it stops having any effect. You can then amplify the whole file... but tbh, it's not usually necessary.
In my 12 years at Librivox, I've only come across one file that had to be redone and that was not a volume issue.
The problem with re-recording is that it is possible you introduced new problems that were not there before.
I should be able to check it tomorrow.

The Life of Ma Parker PL OK

This passes all our checks, but it seemed the volume was a bit erratic and sounded as if parts were patched in. No need to fix anything.
