The Onslaught from Rigel, by Fletcher Pratt (1897 - 1956)

Volunteers outside the USA: Fletcher Pratt died in 1956. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 70 years for authors who died after 1971; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
“Mr. Pratt is well known for .… his excellent knowledge of warfare, and what a future war might be like. In this story he combines that knowledge with a vivid and fertile scientific imagination to construct an interplanetary story …. many scientists believe that life may originally have come to earth in the form of spores, from other solar systems and other universes. We therefore might really have had our home dim ages ago, on worlds distantly removed from our earth.

The ability to travel the interstellar spaces, however, might also be possessed by other creatures—creatures driven by fear, necessity and by the will to conquer. And if they come, in mighty waves, with scientific powers far beyond us, to dominate the earth, a terrible time will face the puny human race.

And in this story they do come, and provoke some of the strangest and most exciting adventures that have yet been recorded. (Summary excerpted from the Preface.)

To the kind MC who picks this up: there's a transcriber's note at the beginning that reads "This etext was produced from Wonder Stories Quarterly Winter 1932. Extensive research did not uncover any evidence that the U.S. copyright on this publication was renewed." I assume from that (and from the fact that this book is on Project Gutenberg) that this book is in the public domain.

Thanks,
Winnifred

Yes, that note does indicate that the text is PD. They do that when the date might not be PD normally, but a lot of science fiction falls into the world of needing to do a lot of research before deciding that it is or is not PD.

I can MC this one for you, Winnifred! Back in a moment with your MW!

Thanks, Ann. Magic Window is filled and ready for readers.

I realized, on looking through my notes again, that I did have a summary excerpted from the Preface that I meant to use, so the summary that's in there now is the finalized one.

Cheers,
Winnifred

I will be away from my computer from December 23 to January 3. I can accept new claims and put them into the Magic Window while I'm away, but anything else (e.g., running submissions through the Checker) will have to wait until my return.

Cheers,
Winnifred
