Christmas in the Heart by Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872 - 1906)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/christmas-in-the-heart-by-paul-laurence-dunbar/
Dunbar became the first African-American poet to earn national distinction and acceptance. The New York Times called him "a true singer of the people – white or black." Frederick Douglass once referred to Dunbar as, "one of the sweetest songsters his race has produced and a man of whom [he hoped] great things."

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave ½ to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
Christmas in the Heart by Paul Laurence Dunbar, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
The snow lies deep upon the ground,
And winter's brightness all around
Decks bravely out the forest sere,
With jewels of the brave old year.
The coasting crowd upon the hill
With some new spirit seems to thrill;
And all the temple bells achime.
Ring out the glee of Christmas time.

In happy homes the brown oak-bough
Vies with the red-gemmed holly now;
And here and there, like pearls, there show
The berries of the mistletoe.
A sprig upon the chandelier
Says to the maidens, “Come not here!”
Even the pauper of the earth
Some kindly gift has cheered to mirth!

Within his chamber, dim and cold,
There sits a grasping miser old.
He has no thought save one of gain,—
To grind and gather and grasp and drain.
A peal of bells, a merry shout
Assail his ear: he gazes out
Upon a world to him all gray,
And snarls, “Why, this is Christmas Day!”

No, man of ice,—for shame, for shame!
For “Christmas Day” is no mere name.
No, not for you this ringing cheer,
This festal season of the year.
And not for you the chime of bells
From holy temple rolls and swells.
In day and deed he has no part—
Who holds not Christmas in his heart!
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Hi David,

Yours is well read except at 0:58 I'm hearing "Within his chamber, deep and cold," instead of "dim and cold".

I always say, a miser's chamber should be deep and cold, but here is the edit... https://librivox.org/uploads/aradlaw/christmasintheheart_dunbar_dl_128kb.mp3

I agree. How about deep, dim and cold, too.

PL OK now, David.
